ATLANTA, GEORGIA, USA - Project Management Institute (PMI®), the world’s leading membership leading membership association for the project management profession, has awarded IBM [NYSE:IBM] with the PMI Distinguished Project Award for IBM’s role in the design and delivery of the Stockholm Congestion Tax Project. The award recognizes successful projects that have advanced project management concepts, techniques, practices or theories through the effective application of project management principles.

In 2005, the city of Stockholm, Sweden, initiated a unique program to reduce vehicle congestion. IBM worked closely with the Swedish Road Administration to launch a trial vehicle-congestion charging, or tax, system that covered a 24 sq km area of the city. The Stockholm Congestion Tax Project had an immediate impact on congestion and overall quality of life for the citizens of Stockholm. By the end of trial, traffic was reduced about 20 percent, while increasing public transit use by 40,000 riders per day. The trial was so successful that the citizens of Stockholm passed a referendum to make the system permanent.

In addition, the project dramatically cut peak-time road congestion. Due to the success of the project, it received the first IBM Project of the Year award and was featured in IBM’s 2006 Annual Report. In presenting IBM with the award PMI noted that “the Stockholm Congestion Tax Project truly exemplifies the value of skilled project management to solve some of the most complicated and nuanced problems cities face today.”

The PMI Distinguished Project Award was presented on 6 October 2007 during the 2007 Awards Ceremony held in conjunction with the PMI Global Congress—North America in Atlanta.
