PMI Project of the Year Award

The award recognizes the year’s most outstanding project and project team for exemplary project

Hatch Ltd.

PMI is proud to honor Hatch Ltd. with the PMI Project of the Year Award in recognition for their leading management role in two large projects for QIT-Fer et Titane.  Hatch, Ltd. played a role of unprecedented influence in this ambitious project to expand the ALP (acid leaching plant) and SPP (slag preparation plant) sectors of QIT-Fer et Titane’s UGS plant in Sorel-Tracey, Quebec. It is a tribute to their expertise that they were entrusted with virtually all of the major project deliverables, from managing engineering, procurement and construction to leading the specification, design and programming of process equipment and controls. The client’s trust was well placed. The UGS plant was able to increase its capacity by an impressive 15%.

PMI Distinguished Project Award

The award recognizes successful projects that have advanced project management concepts, techniques, practices or theories through the effective application of project management principles.

National Council on Compensation Insurance

PMI is proud to present the PMI Distinguished Project Award to the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) for applying best practices on its Residual Market Application Processing System Freeflow Project (RMAPS). NCCI, the nation’s largest provider of workers' compensation data, needed to substantially update its 11-year old RMAPSSM system, which served 28,600 customers from around the country. The challenge: Updating a system so deeply embedded within the rest of the IT infrastructure that any changes could potentially impact operations across the organization. The answer: Base the project approach on procedures contained within A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®Guide) as well as drawing upon aspects of Six Sigma and the Capability Maturity Model (CMM). The result: The project met every standard for scope, schedule, cost, value metrics and user adoption.

Ruby Tuesday, Inc.

PMI is proud to present the PMI Distinguished Project Award to Ruby Tuesday, Inc., (RTI) in recognition of its contribution to the practice of project management. RTI, a chain with 900+ restaurants across the U.S., embarked on one of the largest IT projects in its 36-year history. The “Micros 4.0” initiative involved integrating multiple state-of-the-art technologies with its existing infrastructure. The project included implementing an ultra-secure credit processing system that virtually eliminated the possibility of credit card fraud. The project team collaborated with executive management to create an innovative inclusive process that would engage stakeholders and inspire their continued participation throughout the project life-cycle. The team's approach yielded success – all components were delivered to spec, and RTI became the first restaurant chain to have this ultra-secure system in place.

Velco

PMI is proud to present the PMI Distinguished Project Award to the Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) in honor of its project management approach for the Northwest Vermont Reliability Project (NRP). Founded in 1956, VELCO has evolved from the first ever "transmission only" company in the U.S. into a regional leader in the electricity marketplace of New England. Concerned with the reliability of the region’s outdated electrical infrastructure, VELCO launched the ambitious Northwest Vermont Reliability Project (NRP). From the outset, it knew that this initiative would require the creation of a Project Management Office (PMO) in order to raise the level of project management capability across the organization. The value of this foresight is readily visible: since instituting the PMO, project efforts have doubled while oversight costs have decreased by 35%.

PMI Community Advancement Through Project Management Award

The award recognizes significant achievement that improves the well being of a community by applying project management principles.

Teresa Newton-Terres, PMP

PMI is proud to honor Teresa Newton‑Terres, PMP, with the PMI Community Advancement Through Project Management Award for using her expertise to benefit National Guard families. She also managed the development of a family program that would support 460 PEC employees (military and civilian) and over 22,000 yearly attendees from 54 states, territories and Washington D.C. It is a testament to the effectiveness of her approach that the program grew from 60 quarterly contacts in 2003 to well over 2,868 contacts in the first quarter of 2008.

Everything that takes place within the simulation is based on real project data, ensuring that the project manager faces real situations where their decisions have a real impact on the project’s success.

PMI Distinguished Contribution Award

The award recognizes a PMI member for outstanding contributions to the development and advancement of the project management profession and contributions to the Institute

Tim Bueter, PMP

PMI is proud to honor Tim Bueter, PMP, with the PMI Distinguished Contribution Award for his dedication to the profession and practice of project management. As an employee of Caterpillar, Inc., Mr. Bueter is credited for playing the key role in Caterpillar's acceptance of project management as a profession, not a role. Following his achievement of the PMP credential in 2003, Mr. Bueter was inspired to help others strive for the excellence that the credential represents. This led him to take on the challenge of coordinating multiple regional PMP exam preparation workshops, selflessly donating his time to recruit volunteers, handle meeting logistics and even secure funding. To date, more than 100 project managers have completed the workshops and are now one step closer toward achieving their PMI credentials.

John Makaran

PMI is proud to honor John Makaran with the PMI Distinguished Contribution Award for his dedication to advancing the recognition of the project management profession within the academic community. Mr. Makaran was a tireless champion of the cause of project management at the college level – and his skill and determination enabled him to engage the support of the faculty in formally establishing project management as a core competency for all of the Manufacturing Sciences students. It is a testament to the power of his commitment that the course work he championed is now a pre-requisite for graduation for all of the 200 students in disciplines that range from electronics and technology to robotics and automation.
