Denver, Colorado, USA – The Project Management Institute’s Central Virginia Chapter (PMI CVC) was recognized with the Component of the Year Award. This award honors components that have made the greatest contributions to advancing the practice, science and profession of project management throughout the world in a conscious and proactive manner.
“The PMI Central Virginia Chapter has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the growth of the profession and the development of future practitioners and leaders,” said Brantlee Underhill, CAE, director of practitioner markets for PMI. “These efforts support local practitioners in all stages of their careers.”
PMI Central Virginia Chapter has collaborated with neighboring chapters to reach out to individuals not specifically covered by either geographic location. The chapter has an active professional development committee that connects with Central Virginia community networking through conducting seminars and providing continuing education opportunities. Significant outreach to the community was offered through job training, outreach to Quantico, community education and a library donation program.
The CVC has recently introduced a Portfolio Management Office Local Interest Group (PMO LIG). PMOs are departments or groups that maintain the standards of portfolio management within an organization. The PMO LIG promotes professional portfolio management principles and techniques with local businesses, universities and professional associations. The goal for developing the PMO LIG is to support and enhance portfolio management professionalism in the future by developing and providing quality programs based on the needs of local practitioners and leaders.
The chapter’s continuing efforts in the area of education reach current and future practitioners. In 2000, CVC established a scholarship with Virginia Commonwealth University for a student pursuing a career in project management. PMI CVC donated $10,000, which was matched by the university’s endowment fund. The PMI CVC was recognized with the 2007 PMI Professional Development Provider of the Year Award, Component Category for its Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification workshop program, held twice per year.
The PMI Component of the Year Award was presented on 18 October during the PMI Awards Ceremony at PMI® Global Congress 2008–North America in Denver.
