Community Advancement Through Project Management Award

When is the Deadline: All nominations must be submitted via postal mail to the attention of the Public Relations Specialist, Public Relations,  PMI Global Operations Center by 28 April 2008.
Who Should Participate: Volunteers, organizations and PMI communities who have contributed to the community by applying project management principles to the pro bono delivery of goods and services are eligible for this award. PMI staff members are not eligible for this award.
Who Can Nominate: Nominators must be members of PMI. Self-nomination is permitted.

The PMI® Community Advancement Through Project Management Award recognizes a significant achievement or sustained performance that improves the well being of a community by completing a project, multiple projects or by applying project management principles to the pro bono delivery of goods and services.

Categories

Individual: Volunteer or leader in the community, industry, business, academia, not-for-profit organization or any other movement who is recognized for advancing the well-being of communities through the application of project management principles.

PMI Community: Any chartered PMI component organization in good standing, such as chapters, specific interest groups (SIGs) and colleges.

Organization: A business, not-for profit organization, government agency or any other entity that does not fall under any of the above categories, but undertakes projects that contribute significantly to the social good pro bono or without any type of compensation.

Criteria

The pro bono project must be completed within the previous calendar year. The project should be accomplished by individuals volunteering time and energy, by practitioners working pro bono, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is social good or by other organizations that deploy their resources without compensation. These project achievements or performances may be in local, regional, national or global communities.

Nominations

Nominator(s) must be a PMI member in good standing. Self-nomination is permitted. When more than one person is making the nomination, a lead nominator must be assigned to be responsible for assembling and submitting five copies of the complete nomination package via postal mail to the PMI Global Operations Center. Submittals must be in English.

All nominators must provide a statement of no more than more than three pages to include:

  • • Description/documentation of contribution or service for which the individual, PMI community or organization is being nominated
  • • The category for which the nomination is being submitted
  • • The entity delivering the community service
  • • The community being impacted
  • • Description of the identified need within the community
  • • Project or work accomplished
  • • Type and amount or resources dedicated to the project (time, financial, etc.)
  • • Project principles utilized
  • • Dates and duration of the effort
  • • Synopsis of the work including a 50-word paragraph summarizing the accomplishment, which will be used in publicity should the nomination receive the award

Any pages submitted beyond the prescribed limit will not be evaluated. In addition to the three pages described above, please attach copies of any articles or media attention received as a result of the project, or any other form of community verification or acknowledgement of service.

Nominations must identify the pro bono project and provide documentation as to how the principles of project management were applied to provide humanitarian support. In addition, information regarding the number of people involved and their level of involvement must be included in the nomination packet. The project team may consist of PMI members, employees of other organizations or volunteers from some other not-for-profit organization. Specifically, the nomination packet should contain proof or information that the following criteria were satisfied:

  • • The application of project management principles resulted in a measurable improvement in the social well-being of a particular community and benefited the people who delivered the community service. Documentation must be provided as to how the principles of project management were applied.
  • • The pro bono project had a positive impact on the quality of life within the community.
  • • The contribution or performance made a significant and lasting contribution to the well-being of a community.

There can be no restrictions on the use of submitted information after the final date of submission. All copyrighted materials included in the packet that require protection and permission will be properly obtained.

The Professional Awards Member Advisory Group may award lead nominators up to two Professional Development Units (PDUs)  for submitting nominations for a professional award.

PMI will use PMI.org to call for nominations from the membership at large and also will solicit nominations from PMI’s elected leadership.

Selection Process

The PMI Public Relations Manager will verify the nomination’s eligibility and distribute the nomination package to the designated panel of reviewers for award evaluation. Only one PMI Community Advancement Through Project Management Award may be given in each of the award categories. Each nominated entry is evaluated and ranked only against other nominees under the same specific award category. PMI reserves the right not to select a recipient for a particular year for any category or all categories if the review performed indicates that nominations do not meet the stated criteria.
