Nominations may be submitted by postal mail at any time during the year to the attention of the Public Relations Specialist, Public Relations, PMI Global Operations Center. Nominations must be received no more than one year after project completion. |
| Who Should Participate: |
Projects of any size that demonstrate excellence in leadership and innovation while advancing project management concepts, techniques, practices or theories through the effective application of project management principles are eligible. PMI affiliation is not required, however, nominees submitted for the PMI Project of the Year Award competition are not eligible. |
| Who Can Nominate: |
Anyone with personal knowledge of the project who can document its significance may nominate for this award. Nomination by the project manager is permitted. |
| When is the Winner Announced: |
The PMI Distinguished Project Award is designed to be a timely recognition of project management accomplishments. PMI intends, whenever possible, for the award process to take approximately three to four months from time of receipt of the nomination to presentation of approved award. | |
The PMI® Distinguished Project Award recognizes successful projects that have advanced project management concepts, techniques, practices or theories through the effective application of project management principles.

Criteria
Nominated projects must have been accepted as complete by the client/owner/organization prior to the nomination. The project must have an approved scope, schedule and budget, and met or exceeded expectations through effective application of the A Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) knowledge areas as evidenced by a letter from the owner/client/organization The project must also demonstrate innovative application of project management techniques, practices and methods in the areas of team building and effective communications.
Nominations
Supporting nominations for the award must be submitted as an original document. Nominations must be accompanied by documentation attached to the nomination letter. The lead nominator must include all documentation in one package and provide a statement of no more than two pages that includes:
- • Description/documentation of the specific reasons for which the project is being nominated
- •Length of lead nominator's association with the project nominated
- • The lead nominator’s relationship to the project (e.g., project stakeholder, client/owner, employee)
- • Frequency of the lead nominator’s observations during the project’s life cycle
- • A one paragraph statement of recommendation for the award that may be used for publicity purposes
- • A minimum of two letters of support from individuals other than the lead nominator that include a full description of the reasons the project is deserving of the award
Consistency with the PMBOK® Guide must be clearly delineated in the submitted materials. The entire nomination package may be no more than 15 pages in length. Any pages submitted beyond the prescribed limit will not be evaluated. Submittals must be in English.
Nominations must include a statement acknowledging that proprietary or confidential, technical or commercial information may be publicly disclosed as part of the awards process, and approving such disclosure.
The nominator must submit five copies of the complete nomination package via postal mail.
Each nomination will be reviewed, and the information validated by the PMI Public Relations Manager, in conjunction with the PMI Professional Awards Program Member Advisory Group (MAG). Selections may be made from the received nominations as the reviews are completed.
The Professional Awards Program MAG may award lead nominators up to two Professional Development Units (PDUs) for submitting nominations for a professional award.
Selection Process
PMI’s Distinguished Project Award recipient will be selected from the nominations submitted to the Public Relations Manager at the PMI Global Operations Center. The Professional Awards Program MAG, in conjunction with the Brand Development Manager, will name the review panel that determines the award recipient(s).
There is no limit to the number of awards granted each year. However, PMI reserves the right not to select a recipient of the award if the review performed indicates that nominations do not meet the stated criteria.
