Seattle, Washington, USA – Project Management Institute (PMI), the world’s leading not-for-profit advocacy association for the project management profession, today announced the selection of the Kaiser-Hill Company, LLC, as the winner of its 2006 Project of the Year Award, which recognizes and honors a project and its project team for superior performance and the execution of exemplary project management.
Following an extensive selection process, the Kaiser-Hill’s Rocky Flats Closure Project was selected from among a host of successfully-completed projects from around the world, including the two other finalists — Alma Plant Potlining Centre and the Georgia Aquarium.
Kaiser-Hill was awarded the PMI Project of the Year Award for its Rocky Flats Closure Project, which was nominated by the PMI Mile-Hi Chapter, Colorado, USA. The Rocky Flats Closure Project is the largest, most complex environmental cleanup project of its kind in the world. The $7 billion (US), 10-year cleanup of one of the nation's largest nuclear weapons facilities was completed in October 2005, 14 months ahead of schedule and more than $500 million (US) under revised budget. The site will be now become a wildlife refuge.
The project was completed for the U.S. Department of Energy. Nancy Tuor, President and CEO of Kaiser-Hill Company, LLC, headed the project.
The PMI Mile-Hi Chapter is the ninth largest PMI chapter in the world, whose membership includes the majority of Colorado’s top companies, spanning industries from information technology to aerospace to consumer products.
The Project of the Year Award was presented on 21 October during the Awards Ceremony held in conjunction with PMI Global Congress 2006—North America in Seattle, Washington, USA.
