Seattle, Washington, USA – Project Management Institute (PMI), the world’s leading not-for-profit advocacy association for the project management profession, today announced that Alegent Health has been awarded the 2006 Distinguished Project of the Year Award for its Immanuel Heart Center Project. The Distinguished Project Award recognizes successful projects that have advanced project management concepts, techniques, practices or theories through the effective application of project management principles.
The Immanuel Heart Center Project has improved patient care through a “Universal Bed” model of care, allowing heart and vascular patients to remain in the same room for the duration of their hospital stay following surgery, mitigating the need for unit-to-unit transfer. As a result, nursing care revolves around patient needs, and is scaled down as a patient’s condition improves.
The project involved construction of a 20-bed cardiovascular unit, staffing consolidation from ICU and PINS, change in clinical pathways, and the establishment of a Critical Care Council and a mechanism for advanced caregiver development. The project was completed on time and within budget, and sponsor, patient, family and physician feedback has been very positive.
Alegent Health has over 8,000 employees, a combined medical staff of 1,200 practitioners, more than 100 service locations in Nebraska and Western Iowa, 41,000 in-patient admissions and an owned primary care physician network with more than 475,000 office visits per year.
The Distinguished Project of the Year Award was presented on 21 October during the Awards Ceremony held in conjunction with PMI Global Congress 2006—North America in Seattle, Washington, USA.
