PMI is marking an important moment in its certification history. For the first time, Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM® )credential holders are coming up for renewal. The CAPM credential acknowledges the professional dedication of project team members who contribute to project teams from many different perspectives.
CAPM credential holders maintain their credential by studying the updates to the A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK ® Guide) that have occurred over the last five years. This assures their employers that they have stayed current in their knowledge of project management.
The certification cycle for the CAPM credential is five years. During the fifth year of the cycle, the CAPM credential holder moves into a renewal period of one year. During this period, individuals must re-take and pass the examination before their CAPM credential expires. The steps that are required to maintain their credential include:
1. Apply for CAPM renewal by submitting a CAPM credential renewal form and payment online.
2. Reaffirm the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and the Certification Application/Renewal Agreement, which can be referenced in the CAPM Handbook.
3. After submitting the payment, PMI will send the credential holder an e-mail containing a web link to the examination scheduling instructions.
4. Schedule an appointment to take the CAPM examination. It is offered globally at Prometric Testing Centers.
5. Pass the CAPM examination.
6. Receive from PMI a new certificate with the original CAPM credential number and updated certification cycle dates PMI's streamlined CAPM renewal process means that since PMI already has existing CAPM credential holders' data, he/she does not need to complete the full application as is required in the initial CAPM application submission.
If their CAPM credential expires, the credential holder will lose his/her credential number and a new application must be submitted to re-apply for the CAPM credential. Before re-testing, this new application must be reviewed and approved by PMI. Also, once expired, the credential holder may not use the CAPM designation on business cards, resumes or other documents.
