Congratulations on a job well done!

Now that you are a PMI credential holder, you are required to participate in the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. Your certification/CCR cycle begins the day you pass the exam and/or multi-rater assessment (for PgMP credential holders) and ends on the same date three years later.

To adhere to the CCR program, you need to participate in professional development activities where you earn professional development units (PDUs).

PDUs are used to quantify approved professional development activities. Typically, you earn one PDU for one hour (60 minutes) spent in a planned, structured professional development activity.

Each credential requires a certain number of PDUs per three year credential cycle.

Information about the CCR program can be
found in your respective handbook.

Credential Handbook Number of PDUs needed in three year cycle
PMP PMP 60 PDUs
PgMP PgMP 60 PDUs
PMI-SP PMI-SP 30 PDUs in specialized area of project scheduling
PMI-RMP PMI-RMP 30 PDUs in specialized area of project risk management
CAPM CAPM No PDUs.  Re-exam at end of five year cycle

Five Tips for Maintaining Your PMI Credential(s)

1. Start early. Establish a strategy for attaining your PDUs before your cycle begins.

2. Maintain a personal folder for all your PDU claims documentation. This information will be valuable if your reporting form is randomly selected for audit.

3. Report activities soon after completion. This makes it easier to complete the Activity Reporting Form.

4. Take advantage of the opportunity to transfer PDUs from one cycle to the next. PMP and PgMP credential holders can transfer up to 20 PDUs earned in the last year of your current cycle. PMI-SP and PMI-RMP credential holders can transfer up to 10 PDUs earned in the last year of your current cycle.

5. Make sure you have the registered program number for R.E.P. classes, which is required on the Activity Reporting Form.

Read a recent article from PMP Passport about credential maintenance.

Access the Activity Reporting Form to Report PDUs.

If you do not maintain an active certification status by adhering to the CCR program, your credential will expire and you will no longer be allowed to refer to yourself as a credential holder. While nothing is required to maintain an academic degree, continuing education is a requirement for maintaining most PMI credentials. Your participation in continuing education activities indicates to your peers, employers, employees and clients that you are committed to professional development.
