Leadership Institute

Excel as a leader. Reach new heights in your career and life.

More than 5,000 members volunteer on numerous PMI projects to advance the profession. To nurture these members, who are the current and future voice of the profession, we have made the development of leadership skills a high priority.

If you're an active volunteer with PMI communities and project teams, you may become eligible for the Leadership Institute, a robust program of leadership development and training.

The program focuses on core knowledge areas and engages you in varied activities to create an exceptional opportunity for professional and personal growth. The program is structured and flexible to help you reach your development milestones.

Through the Leadership Institute, you will deepen your knowledge of leadership, add to your experience and sharpen your skills. You will be well prepared for greater leadership roles within PMI and to advance the profession on a global level.

Leadership Institute elements and knowledge areas

Curriculum of the Leadership Institute covers more than 40 competencies and 170 skills organized under three core knowledge areas:

  1. Institutional Knowledge: learn about PMI and its history
  2. Association Governance: learn about management of a not-for-profit organization
  3. Individual Leadership Development: expand your ability to lead in both professional and personal environments

Through a leadership skills inventory, we'll determine which of the following elements of the Leadership Institute will best fit your level of learning.

The 2013 PMI® Leadership Institute Meetings are as follows. Announcement of registration opening will be communicated via Friday Facts, your online community sites and through region mentors:

Leadership Institute Master Class - a year-long initiative that provides intensive training, development and support for a limited group of volunteer leaders who meet or exceed the learning level of the experienced volunteer leader.

Elements of the Master Class experience include:

  • Evaluations - Class participants complete a 360-degree assessment that evaluates and provides insight about the individual. Other assessments are also incorporated into the program.
  • Master Class Seminars - Participants meet in person three times throughout the year to engage in activities focused on leadership techniques, management practices and other skills for volunteer, career and interpersonal development. Participants can choose to learn about not-for-profit organization functions including governance, legal requirements and volunteer development.
  • Coaching - Individual coaching sessions are provided for each participant and ongoing coaching and mentoring opportunities are offered by session facilitators, classmates and other volunteer leaders.
  • Virtual Leadership Forums - Beyond the face-to-face meeting dates, participants benefit from an ongoing and open forum for continued learning and discussion.
