Summary
PMI is seeking volunteers to lead the formation and implementation of a new virtual community dedicated to leadership development. Each volunteer will have a specific role as identified below and collectively serve on the PMI Leadership in Project Management Community of Practice (CoP) Steering Committee. The steering committee is responsible for navigating through and completing the formation process. This committee shall be made up of a group of people who share a concern, or a passion about a topic, and who want to deepen their understanding and knowledge of this area by interacting on an ongoing basis.
As the community develops and the steering committee evolves from managing formation activities to facilitating the creation of a social networking structure, the role and composition of the steering committee will shift from a stewardship group to the Community Council. When the community is official, the amount of time a member can serve on the Community Council is limited to terms.
The Community Involvement Lead is an individual who fosters and facilitates member interaction as well as energizing and motivating community participation. The individual in this role identifies the needs for additional support and oversees the volunteer recruitment process, including the annual transition process. He or she also identifies synergies to create interfaces and connections with other PMI communities. A committee to support the Community Involvement Lead may be created as determined by the community’s business plan.
Role Responsibilities:
• Creates opportunities and avenues for global participation.
• Implements tactics to drive participation in community’s activities.
• Oversees the volunteer recruitment process.
• Provides mentoring, coaching, and training in human and social aspects.
• Builds and maintains relationships within the community as well as other PMI communities.
• Acts as a liaison to related projects, initiatives, and other communities.

• Has ability to set a strategic vision into actions and results by clarifying and communicating goals and priorities in a manner that energizes people to move in the same direction.
• Attracts, develops, and retains talent with the suitable skills and motivations to meet organizational goals and objectives.
• Creates and maintains effective, high-performing teams and partnerships.
• Recognizes opportunities to develop relationships with other PMI communities.
• Possesses a knowledge and understanding of PMI’s member benefits, relationship with PMI communities and their structures, and how volunteers support the organizational success of PMI.
Deliverable(s)
• Preparation of the business plan for the virtual community
• Launch of the virtual community
• Ongoing management of the virtual community
Culture of Assignment
• The PMI Leadership in Project Management CoP Council will operate virtually most, if not all of the time. If the community promotes any face-to-face events or if the leadership team members are attending another PMI event, and then it is likely the leadership team may meet in the same location.
Alignment to PMI Strategy
The purpose of the PMI Leadership in Project Management CoP is to provide a critical knowledge generation, knowledge sharing and knowledge application working space to the entire PMI Community in regard to developing and enhancing leadership and excellence in project, program and portfolio management. The focus of the PMI Leadership in Project Management CoP is to create awareness, provide education, exchange knowledge, offer tools and techniques, enable collaboration and mentoring the advancement of the profession through leadership development.
Volunteer Start and End Dates
• Initial volunteers in these leadership roles will be asked to serve for a one year term with potential renewal for a second year to ensure the virtual community is launched and functioning effectively and efficiently. Additional terms of service will be considered as the community evolves.
Estimated Time Commitment
• The time commitment initially may be several hours per week to get the virtual community launched and then will be likely reduced for the ongoing management of the virtual community.
Requirements
Volunteers serving on the PMI Leadership in Project Management CoP Council are expected to be knowledgeable about project, program, and portfolio management and to have a strong passion for global sustainability.
Volunteers must possess the following additional skills and knowledge:
• Must be PMI members in good standing.
• Have good project, program and/or portfolio management capability.
• Required to adhere to the laws, rules and regulations that govern the conduct of our business and to report any suspected violations in accordance with responsibilities provided in the "PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, Terms of Use and Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality."
• Understand PMI’s organizational structure, including the PMI Strategic Plan and the community’s purpose within those strategic objectives
• Understand and commit to PMI’s objectives and goals around increasing member value and knowledge delivery
• Become familiar with PMI’s annual program plan and budget cycle
• Understand PMI’s brand platform and how the community supports those objectives
• Possess experience in leading teams in a virtual environment demonstrating results and progress toward community goals
• Posses knowledge and understanding of basic nonprofit fiduciary responsibilities, which are PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, Terms of Use, and, Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality
• Create a positive environment for progress through respect of individuals, credibility, and empathy
• Recognize and practice diversity awareness within PMI’s global community of practitioners
• Empower others
• Possess group facilitation skills
• Be able to stimulate and motivate others to share their ideas and thoughts to engage others
• Be familiar and support PMI’s policies and the Virtual Community Guidelines.
The volunteers serving on the Community Council are required to sign PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality Agreements.
Members who are determined to have a conflict of interest and/or pending and imminent litigation and ethics complaints are not eligible to apply for a Virtual Community Council position.
Members can reside and/or work in any part of the world but must be able to fulfill their role using English. No travel is required although opportunities to travel on behalf of the community may exist in the future in regard to leadership development.
