| Detailed Description: | The PMBOK® Guide – Third Edition continues to be an appropriate reference for individuals who will take a PMI certification exam prior to 30 June 2009.
A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) – Third Edition offers a set of processes, generally recognized as good practice, which delivers results across industries and organizations. With over two million copies in circulation, the PMBOK® Guide is renowned as one of the leading tools for the profession and is an essential reference for the library of every project management practitioner. The PMBOK® Guide contains the fundamental, baseline practices that drive business results for any organization – local, regional and global.
To maintain PMI’s commitment to continually improve and revise the information in this essential reference manual, as well as to maintain its status as an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved standard, the PMBOK® Guide is updated at least every five years. Through 30 June 2009, the PMBOK® Guide – Third Edition continues to be an appropriate reference to include in preparation for all PMI certification exams. The next update, the Fourth Edition, will be released 31 December 2008.
Please read below for information on how PMI’s certification exams will be impacted by the release of the Fourth Edition.
When an update to a standard, such as the PMBOK® Guide—Fourth Edition, is released, PMI certification exams are updated to reflect changes in the professional reference. There will be no immediate impact to the current examination. It is estimated that only a small percentage of examination items/questions require updates that directly address actual changes in the standards. New questions are being always being produced, tested, and then used to replace older questions on a periodic schedule.
Exam updates are scheduled as follows: PMP®—30 June 2009; CAPM®—31 July 2009; PgMP®—31 August 2009; PMI-SPSM—31 August 2009; PMI-RMPSM—31 August 2009.
If you plan to sit for a PMI certification exam prior to these dates, then the PMBOK® Guide – Third Edition is appropriate to include as one of your study materials. Please remember that PMI’s global standards are only one reference in the full project management body of knowledge, therefore a variety of resources should be consulted to fully prepare for a PMI certification exam. For more information, including an FAQ on the updated global standards and their impact on PMI certification exams, come to PMI.org > Resources > Global Standards.
