Abstract:The recent advancements in information technology have forever changed human communication behavior. Today, project teams and stakeholders communicate more quickly and easily through such tools as e-mail, shared document folders, and software for project management functions. One such tool is Web 2.0. This paper examines this tool in relation to its impact on project communication. In doing so, it explains the purpose and function of Web 2.0, an e-commerce-enabling communication technology; it compares five types of Web 2.0 technologies: Weblog, Wiki, Podcast, Videocast, and Web conference. It overviews PMI's four processes for Project Communication Management, as published in the third edition of its PMBOK® Guide; it identifies the relationship between the tools and techniques used in implementing these four processes and the capabilities of communication technology. It then details examples of using two Web 2.0 technologies (Wiki to collaborate in developing a software project; Weblog to capture and convey project progress) as well as one similar technology, a project information portal based on Communardo's ProductivityNet Portal Technology. It analyzes the five Web 2.0 technologies and suggests which communication method (formal/informal verbal, formal/informal written) each technology serves best. It concludes by outlining the four benefits of using Web 2.0 technologies to enhance project communication management.
