Abstract:The lean product development (LPD) approach--an automotive industry benchmark developed in the 1950s by Toyota Motor Company--is currently used by companies operating in a wide array of industries, companies which are achieving success because of LPD. This paper examines an approach for implementing LPD. In doing so, it explains the benefits of using a product development approach and details LPD's principles for managing wasteful project practices and for planning lean development activities, discussing as it does other value flows, including the traditional, the agile, and the set-based concurrent engineering (SBCE). It then identifies the required lean principles and key project management processes--based on those listed in PMI's PMBOK® Guide--for implementing product development projects. It also analyzes the issues involved in practicing traditional and agile planning. It concludes by identifying six planning elements essential to using LPD.
