Abstract:The complexity of today's projects demands that project managers adopt new approaches for implementing projects. This paper examines how project managers can use the agile and lean approaches to effectively plan and control their projects. In doing so, it identifies the common negative perceptions of practicing project management and describes the concepts shaping the lean and the agile approaches to managing projects. It also explains the goals and the process for integrating the lean and agile approaches. It then discusses how one virtual team integrated the lean and the agile approaches to successfully manage a complex project, listing ten lessons the team learned from integrating these approaches. It summarizes four areas that can affect an organization's capability to adopt and implement the proposed integrated approach, areas that include organizational culture and maturity, stakeholder motivation and communication, project categorization, and defined project management methodology.
