| Abstract: | Lean manufacturing has long helped manufacturers maximize the value of their operations and minimize the waste involved in producing goods. This paper examines how project managers can adapt and apply the tools and techniques used in practicing lean manufacturing to improve project outcomes, explaining how Toyota and Motorola have excelled after adopting and implementing the lean methodology. In doing so, it discusses lean manufacturing's evolution and benefits and defines its five principles. It also identifies five reasons that cause project failure and describes the current state of project management's value system. It then details how project managers can use the lean approach to manage their projects, listing seven factors used by the lean aerospace initiative (LAI) to create product development value-stream maps. It outlines three issues involved in applying the lean approach and suggests a four-component road map and five-component tool box for practicing lean project management. |
