Teaching Project Management to Juvenile Offenders

A group of children at a juvenile detention center discovered project management as a career option thanks to Michiko Diby, PMP (on the right) of Sealight, LLC. Ms. Diby described the experience as "one of the most enjoyable days of my year." She broke down the basics of project management, and her message to the kids was: "You already have basic project management skills."

Ms. Diby recounted her experience on her blog Preventing Project Failure. She worked with two sets of boys and two sets of girls and used Careers in Project Management and Project Management Skills for Life, two educational items offered by the PMI Educational Foundation.

New Training Scholarships for Teachers and Non-Profits

PMIEF is excited to offer project management training scholarships for primary and secondary school teachers as well as employees of non-profit and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Teachers can enhance the learning experience in their classrooms through project-based learning, and non-profits and NGOs can use project management to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their operations.

Cheetah Learning recently donated scholarships for their project management training course PM Fundamentals Online Certificate Program. These scholarships are available to both teachers and non-profits.

Cadence Management Corporation continues to offer scholarships for their project management training course Project Management Essentials. Their on-site trainings take place in select US cities; click here for the schedule.

Contribute Through the United States Combined Federal Campaign and United Way

The convenience of payroll deductions makes workplace giving a very popular way to donate in many countries and you may now designate all or a portion of your gift to the PMI Educational Foundation through your local United Way Campaign or the U.S. Combined Federal Campaign.

Combined Federal Campaign – If you’re a U.S. federal employee, you may now designate your CFC gift or a portion of your gift to the Project Management Institute Educational Foundation (PMIEF). The CFC designation number is 74213.
United Way Donor Designation – If your employer holds an annual United Way campaign, you may be able to designate all or part of your contribution to PMIEF.  As each United Way has its own numbering system and rules regarding designation of donor gifts, there is no universal United Way number that identifies the PMI Educational Foundation.  So, we recommend that you write-in on the United Way pledge form PMIEF’s full name and address as follows to ensure that the funds reach us:

Social Networking for Social Good

The PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF) has taken its mission of promoting project management for educational and humanitarian purposes to social networking sites. This interactive experience is a way to find out about the latest programs and initiatives as well as interact with like-minded people who believe in using project management to benefit society.

The PMIEF social networking sites were built for project management practitioners, teachers, humanitarian workers, other industry professionals, supporters of the cause, and those who would like to learn more. The Facebook page and LinkedIn group are hubs for discussion where everyone is encouraged to contribute their thoughts. Following PMIEF on Twitter allows you to stay up to date on the latest news, communicate with PMIEF staff members directly, and connect with members of the communities served by project management.

Sharing PMIEF materials with your family, friends, and colleagues is made easy via social networks. Videos on Youtube, photos on Flickr, and presentations on Slideshare show the visual impact of project management in the classroom and in the field of disaster relief and recovery. These items can be shared as links as well as embedded on your website or blog.

PMIEF.org is a resource containing educational products that break down project management as a career option for students, a life skill for all ages, and a tool to be used by disaster relief and recovery personnel.

Careers in Project Management can be used by high school/secondary school students and career guidance counselors. It explains the basics of project management and outlines related career options.

Project Management Skills for Life is a guide that shows how project management is not only for businesses and can be helpful to people in their everyday lives. Whether you are planning a vacation or a school function, project management skills can help you improve your effectiveness and efficiency.

The PMI Project Management Methodology for Post Disaster Reconstruction applies project management principles to disaster relief and recovery. This methodology can be used by relief agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and governments in the wake of a major disaster.
