Project Management Training Fellowships Frequently Asked Questions

The PMI Educational Foundation has established a project management training fellowship program for assisting qualified individuals in learning the fundamentals of project management.  The learning from this training will enable the qualified individuals to utilize project management skills in enhancing their effectiveness and efficiency in the execution of their professional and/or volunteer work.  It will also enable the individuals to better understand the execution of projects and the use of project management by others.

 

What is project management?

In A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) – Third Edition, the Project Management Institute defines project management as: the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities in order to meet project requirements. Meeting project requirements invariably involves balancing competing demands among:

  • Scope, time, cost, and quality.
  • Stakeholders with differing needs and expectations.
  • Identified requirements (needs) and unidentified requirements (expectations).

The balance of competing interests and needs in project management requires a unique set of skills in working with people and teams, confidence and clarity in communication, and a courage and determination to succeed.

What is a project?

In A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) – Third Edition, the Project Management Institute defines a project as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service. As simple as this definition may seem, there are a few key points that define a project as distinct from ongoing operations. Again, from the PMBOK® Guide:

Operations and projects differ primarily in that operations are ongoing and repetitive while projects are temporary and unique. A project can thus be defined in terms of its distinctive characteristics. Temporary means that every project has a definite beginning and a definite end. Unique means that the product or service is different in some distinguishing way from all similar products or services.

Why is the PMI Educational Foundation offering project management training for educators?

The PMI Educational Foundation is a philanthropic organization focused on bringing the power of project management to selected elements of society.  Project management is both a profession and a set of skill used by people in other professions.  As a profession, educators will benefit from understanding and applying project management through improvements in effectiveness and efficiency.  Additionally, understanding project management would assist educators in their implementation of project-based learning for students, which also is being supported by PMIEF.

What is project-based learning?

The concept of project-based learning represents a shift in educational theory that has taken place over the last 25 years. The premise is that learning at all ages is strengthened when the learner is challenged across disciplines. When posed with a project in the classroom, students are forced to engage multiple disciplines in constructing a broad solution, exercising logical and critical thinking muscle and connecting discrete bodies of knowledge to create new information.

While education theorists have awakened to the power of project-based learning in the classroom, organizations around the world continue to define and develop more sophisticated project management tools and technologies. But the basic principle is the same as that in a classroom environment: challenge a team of individuals to define and develop a concrete solution to a critical challenge through critical thinking, effective design, and exemplary communication.

What is the cost of the PMIEF Project Management Training For Educators?

Participants in the PMIEF Project Management Training for Educators program receive complimentary enrollment in the project management seminar.  A full description of the complimentary enrollment is described on pmief.org.  While there is no cost to attend the course, participants will be responsible for all travel and transportation costs, along with any costs that might be associated with being away from work.

What organizations conduct the project management training?

At this time, the project management training will be conducted by Cadence Management Corporation. Where is the project management training conducted?

The Cadence Project Management 3-day public seminars are held throughout the year in selected locations.  The current schedule is posted on pmief.org.

Attendees will receive a Cadence Certificate of Completion for attending the course. Attendees will also receive 24 education contact hours toward the formal education requirements of the application for the Project Management Professional (PMP®) or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) credential available through the Project Management Institute.
