A Round of Applause for the 2007 PMI Professional Award Recipients!

The PMI Professional Awards, honoring the best of the best in project management, were presented on 6 October just prior to PMI Global Congress 2007—North America in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The awards recognize those projects and practitioners that excelled in the previous calendar year. 

Congratulations to the award recipients!  

PMI Project of the Year Award:

Fluor Corp., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fernald Closure Project, involving cleanup of a 1,050-acre site formerly used for uranium production. The project was completed 12 years ahead of schedule and $7.8 billion below original estimates. 

PMI Project of the Year Award Runner Up:

Marriott International, Washington, D.C., USA, for the Marriott Bedding Project, which took only two years to develop and implement a bedding package for more than 628,000 beds across 10 Marriott lodging brands at 2,400 hotels around the world.

PMI Project of the Year Award Runner Up:

Jacobs Canada Inc., Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Suncor Energy Ltd., Alberta, Canada, for the Suncor Firebag Project Cogeneration Plant, which will support Suncor’s long-term goal of producing 500,000 barrels of oil a day between 2010 and 2012.

PMI Distinguished Project Award:

The city of Stockholm, Sweden, the Swedish Road Administration, and IBM, for the Stockholm Congestion Tax Project, which included the launch of a vehicle-congestion tax system that reduced traffic by 25 percent and increased public transportation use by 40,000 riders per day.

PMI Fellow Award:

Louis J. Mercken, PMP, chief executive partner and chairman, Threon Group, Zwijnaarde, Belgium. A PMI member since 1995, Mr. Mercken is a past member of the PMI Board of Directors and was the first PMI Chair from outside of North America.

PMI Fellow Award:

Julie M. Wilson, PMP, practice executive and principal, IBM Global Services’ Global Technology Services. Ms. Wilson is credited with founding the PMI specific interest groups (SIGs) and served on the PMI Board of Directors for six years.

PMI Distinguished Contribution Award:

  • Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin, co-author of several project management books, including AMA Handbook of Project Management and What Makes a Good Project Manager; editor in chief, Center for Business Practices, Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA
  • Miguel Saenz de Viguera, PMP, head of the Program for Project Management Excellence at Madrid, Spain-based IT and systems engineering company Indra Sistemas S.A.
  • Dorothy J. Tiffany, PMP, a program executive in the Office of the Chief Engineer, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Washington, D.C., USA, and
  • Walter Majerowicz, PMP, deputy program manager for the Computer Sciences Corporation Program Analysis and Control II contract at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

PMI David I. Cleland Project Management Literature Award:

Paul C. Dinsmore, PMI Fellow, PMP, president of Dinsmore & Associates Inc., Costa Mesa, California, USA; and Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin, editor in chief, Center for Business Practices, Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA—co-editors of AMA Handbook of Project Management—Second Edition.

PMI Community Advancement Through Project Management Award, Organizational Category:

Ericsson, a Stockholm, Sweden-based telecommunications company, for advancing communities in need with its project management-based pro bono Ericsson Response program for international assistance in disasters.

PMI Linn Stuckenbruck Person of the Year Award:

Eric Norman, PMP, PgMP, vice president and chief project officer, ChoicePoint Inc., Alpharetta, Georgia, USA, for his outstanding contributions to the project management profession and to PMI in 2006, including leading the development of the Practice Standard for Work Breakdown Structures—Second Edition.

PMI Professional Development Provider of the Year Award, Academic Category:

The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education, Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, for its Certificate in Project Management Program.

PMI Professional Development Provider of the Year Award, Organizational Category:

The Boeing Co., Chicago, Illinois, USA, and its project management training partner Novations Group Inc., Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

PMI Professional Development Provider of the Year Award, Individual/Business Category:

Lee Lambert, PMP, CEO and lead instructor, Lambert Consulting Group, Dublin, Ohio, USA, for 23 years of delivery and implementation of project management training programs.

PMI Professional Development Provider of the Year Award, Component Ccategory:

PMI Central Virginia, USA Chapter for its Project Management Professional (PMP)
Certification Workshop program, held twice a year.

PMI Professional Development Product of the Year Award, Corporate Category:

Eurobank Poland, for its Massava Training interactive workshop that teaches
employees that project success and failure are the actions of the entire team.

PMI Professional Development Product of the Year Award, Individual/Business Category:

Global Knowledge, Cary, North Carolina, USA, for its PMP Blended Certification Program.

James Snyder Student Paper of the Year Award:

Tonya M. Peterson, PMP, for her paper titled, Motivation: How to Increase Project Team Performance. This award was renamed in honor of James Snyder, a founding member of PMI, in recognition of his service to the PMI Educational Foundation.
