PMI Board Updates Core Values

PMI’s Board of Directors recently approved a revitalized set of core values, a key part of PMI’s ideology and its identity.

Core values are essential and enduring principles that guide PMI and aim to drive behavior by ensuring that the Institute’s stakeholders are aligned with these important identifying traits.

The Board undertook this 10-month effort as part of its regular review of PMI’s Strategic Plan, which includes the core values. The core values section was the only part of the Strategic Plan that remained unchanged from the original writing in 2002.

Consisting of three PMI directors, three global leaders and three PMI staff members, the Core Values Review Task Team began their work in December 2008 and immediately sought input from key stakeholders so they could clarify PMI’s core values.

Their goal was to have stakeholders remember the values, understand their consistent definitions, and apply these values to their daily decisions and behaviors.

The result of this effort is PMI’s new core values, including a preamble and descriptive sentences.

“This collaborative work will have long-lasting value that will impact PMI’s operation and direction. We at PMI all share a set of values that made us successful in the past and will continue leading us to grow into the future. We want core values that are easy to remember and quote,” said Yanping Chen, MD, PhD, PMP, PMI Director who served on the task team.

The PMI Core Values

PMI is driven by a clear mission and an underlying set of values that drive how we act and influence the expectations of our stakeholders. Even as a diverse organization, we share a common set of values. Our core values are not subject to changes in the association and business environment or dictated by trends in organization management. These values are fundamental and deeply held.

As part of our core ideology, PMI’s core values are enduring and are guiding principles upon which we act.

At PMI we believe in:

Project Management Impact
Project management is a critical competence that has a positive influence on organization results and society.

Professionalism
Accountability and ethical behavior ensures our commitment to PMI stakeholders.

Volunteerism
Volunteers and effective volunteer partnerships with staff are the best way to accomplish the Institute’s goals and objectives.

Community
Bringing members of the global project management community together is the best way to advance the project management profession and facilitate their growth.

Engagement
Encouraging diverse viewpoints and enabling individuals to contribute to the project management profession and to the Institute.
