Examination Content Outline to Serve as PMP Exam Blueprint

As noted in a previous article in Community Post, the Project Management Professional (PMP)® credential examination will be revised in 2011, based on updates to the professional role of a PMP® credential holder recently found by PMI’s Role Delineation Study (RDS).

The PMP Examination Content Outline will replace the PMP Examination Specification for the new examination. The new PMP Examination Content Outline is available as a free, downloadable PDF from PMI.org. Until the examination update on 31 August 2011, the current PMP Examination Specification will remain the “go-to” source for information on the PMP examination. Starting on 31 August 2011, the PMP Examination Content Outline will be the source of the information.

The PMP Examination Content Outline outlines the domains of responsibility and the tasks performed that are expected of the PMP credential holder, as well as the knowledge/skills needed to perform these tasks.

The examination content outline can serve as a starting point for two activities:

  • Assessing your project management experience, and
  • Studying for the PMP examination.

Assessing project management experience: The requirements for sitting for the PMP examination include having experience hours in leading and directing projects. More detail on the activities that define leading and directing projects is included in the PMP Examination Content Outline so that potential credential holders can better assess how their experiences meet the requirements of the PMP credential.

Studying for the PMP examination: The PMP Examination Content Outline serves as the blueprint for the PMP examination. Potential credential holders can use the PMP Examination Content Outline as a starting point for their study, identifying the tasks, knowledge and skills that they need to study.

Using the PMP Examination Content Outline can help potential credential holders to identify study materials, including PMI global standards and project management texts, to address these areas.
