International Standards Activities

International Standards Activities

PMI volunteers and staff participate in a number of standards activities at the international level in order to promote the project management profession.

ISO/PC236 Project Committee

One of the primary international standards activities for PMI is ISO/PC236 Project Management, which has developed the upcoming ISO Standard 21500 Guide to Project Management. PMI believes that this will be an important standard for the project management profession that  all project practitioners should be aware of.

Begun in 2006, PC236  has developed the 21500 standard which will be released for review and balloting to ISO member countries as a Final Draft International Standard (DIS) in the second quarter 2012. Upon approval of the FDIS, 21500 will be published by ISO as an International Standard in approximately September 2012.

Over 35 countries have participated in the development of this standard. The ISO/PC236 Secretariat has been administered by PMI on behalf of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), with Karl Best, a PMI staff member, serving as PC236 Secretary. PC236 has been chaired by Mr. Miles Shepherd on behalf of the British Standards Institute (BSI).

For more information on ISO/PC236 and its members, please refer to the ISO/PC236 web page.

For additional questions about ISO/PC236 and ISO 21500, please contact Karl Best, the ISO/PC236 Secretary.

ISO/TC258 Technical Committee

Approved by the Technical Management Board (TMB) of ISO in October 2010, TC258 Project, Programme, and Portfolio Management will extend the work of PC236 to develop additional standards in this area. Where PC236 was chartered to develop a single standard, 21500, TC258 is allowed to create any number of standards in the field of project, program, and portfolio management.

If you are interested in participating in ISO/ TC258, you must first join your country’s mirror committee; you can start by contacting your country’s national standards body.

The ISO/TC258 Secretariat is administered by PMI on behalf of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), with Karl Best, a PMI staff member, serving as TC258 Secretary. TC258 is chaired by Mr. Miles Shepherd on behalf of the British Standards Institute (BSI).

For more information on  ISO/TC258 and its members, please refer to the ISO/ TC258 web page.
