PDU Categories for Your Year in Professional Development
PMI promotes professional development through the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program to improve the performance of its credential holders and to support the profession. To adhere to the program and maintain your credential, you have to earn the following amounts of professional development units (PDU) depending on which credential you hold:
| Credential | Number of PDUs: |
|---|---|
| PMP | 60 PDUs |
| PgMP® | 60 PDUs |
| PMI-SP® | 30 PDUs |
| PMI-RMP® | 30 PDUs |
There are five categories in which you can earn PDUs. Prepare for your year in professional development with a better familiarity with these categories. Here are some examples of qualifying activities in each category.
CATEGORY 1: Formal Academic Education
This applies to any degree-awarding program. For example, if you are studying for an MBA, each hour of class instruction related to project management equals one PDU. You cannot claim the entire degree program, only individual classes or the hours spent during those classes on project management topics.
CATEGORY 2: Professional Activities and Self-directed Learning
There are many activities in which you can engage to earn you PDUs in this category. Did you know that practicing project management professionally awards you PDUs? You can also write articles for peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed publications as well as submit materials to PMI’s Knowledge Shelf. You can also read books on project management or be mentored or coached in project management topics.
CATEGORY 3: Courses offered by PMI Registered Education Providers (R.E.P)/PMI Components
PMI has more than 1,100 R.E.P.s worldwide and chapters in many countries that hold PDU-generating events, workshops and seminars. Use the new online CCR System to find activities that fit your schedule and budget. Participating in PMI’s SeimnarsWorld® or eSeminarsWorldSM courses also earns you PDUs in this category.
CATEGORY 4: Courses offered by Other Education Providers
Here are three examples of what kind of activities qualify:
- A PMP® credential holder in your organization leads a workshop or class about project management or related topics,
- University courses that grant certification (like an advanced project management certificate) or that do NOT count toward a degree program, or
- An R.E.P. class that is not registered with PMI also may apply.
CATEGORY 5: Volunteer Service to Professional or Community Organizations
You are awarded PDUs for non-compensated work provided to a non-profit group. If you help manage a donation project or fundraising project for a non-profit group, these activities qualify. Also check PMI’s volunteer opportunities and make a difference.
Be sure to claim your PDUs online. For complete details on PDU categories, read the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) section of your credential handbook.
