PMI’s Distinguished Project Award Brings More than Recognition
Projects aren’t usually launched with hopes of receiving awards and accolades. But for some, the effort is so outstanding that it needs to be recognized.
To call attention to these exceptional endeavors, in 2006 PMI launched the Distinguished Project Award, which identifies successful projects that have used the best in project management concepts, practices and principles.
Last year, Mumbai, India-based engineering company Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) received a PMI Distinguished Project Award for its work to expand an existing gas booster compressor platform.
The company operates in the field of technology, engineering and construction and has an international presence both for these services and its supporting manufacturing capability. With a turnover in excess of US$7 billion it is one of India's largest private companies.
The Booster Compressor Platform Project (BCP-B2), which is the project for which the company received the award, involved building a complex offshore processing platform. The US$283 million project was completed a few days ahead of the 26-month schedule and turned in savings of 20 percent on the projected cost.
According to Vinod Kanjan, deputy general manager of projects for L&T, the BCP-B2 was declared a “model” project by the clients who praised L&T for its teamwork, planning and project management skills.
Receiving the PMI award has proven beneficial for the company.
“With PMI recognition, we are better equipped for our new bids for domestic as well as international clients as compared to our competition,” Mr. Kanjan says. “We get extra mileage for our success story in project management.”
PMI recognition also provides a powerful promotional boost.
"[The award] makes L&T and the project managers concerned more marketable,” says Mr. Kanjan.
The PMI Distinguished Project Awards offers an opportunity to recognize projects within their geographic area in the presence of peers and stakeholders.
Nominations are accepted throughout the year. The project can be of any size and type, and does not need to have a PMI affiliation. The nomination must be received no later than one year after the project is completed.
