Volunteerism: A Great Way to Earn PDUs
You can satisfy a portion of the Professional Development Unit (PDU) requirements for the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program by participating in non-compensated volunteer activities related to project management.
To earn PDUs, volunteers must:
- Participate in a project as defined by A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)—Third Edition
- Receive no compensation
- Provide services to a project management organization, a nonemployer or nonclient customer group, or a legally recognized not-for-profit community or charitable organization.
A project manager can claim a maximum of 20 PDUs per three-year CCR cycle in Category 5 (volunteer activities). The number of PDUs earned varies depending upon the type of volunteer service provided. For example, Project Management Professional (PMP®) holder may claim up to five PDUs per calendar year for project management-related services provided to legally recognized not-for-profit community or charitable organizations. Serving in an official capacity—for instance, a committee member or officer—for a project management organization, however, results in a different number of PDUs depending on the type and length of service. Refer to the CCR Handbook for guidelines on reporting PDUs including the conversion rate, category descriptions and examples of documentation required for PDU activities.
Examples of qualifying activities and their associated PDU values include:
- Serve as an officer for a project management organization for four months: Two PDUs
- Work as part of a project management team for the design and deployment of an outreach program for a legally recognized not-for-profit charitable organization for a full calendar year: Five PDUs
- Work as part of a project management team to review and make recommendations for funding requests received by a legally recognized not-for-profit charitable organization for two months: Five PDUs.
