Maintain Your Credential

Credential Maintenance Is Easier When You Have a Plan

As you know, the Continuing Certification Requirements program requires you to earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) during your three-year certification cycle to maintain your Project Management Professional (PMP)SM credential.

To some, this task may seem daunting unless you make a plan of action for earning PDUs. Understanding the various PDU categories can help you map out your course.

There are five categories under which you can earn PDUs. Those categories include:

  • Category 1: Formal Academic Education
  • Category 2: Professional Activities and Self-Directed Learning
  • Category 3: Courses offered by PMI Registered Education Providers (R.E.P.) or Components
  • Category 4: Courses Offered by Other Education Providers
  • Category 5: Volunteer Service to Professional or Community Organizations

As you move through your certification cycle and earn PDUs, it is best to save all documentation you receive from your activities in a file folder at your home or office. A percentage of credential holders are randomly selected for PMI’s audit process and you will need to submit documentation to complete the audit.

Report your PDUs online as you earn them to make tracking them easier.

Consult the CCR section of the PMP Credential Handbook for more details on the PDU categories and calculations associated with each category. Check the PDU Opportunities Listing in this newsletter and on PMI.org for more activities that award PDUs.
