Q. What is happening to my PMP expiration date?
A. Instead of expiring on 31 December, all PMP certifications will now expire on the third anniversary of the day and month that you earned your credential.
Q. Does this change in my PMP expiration date shorten my PMP cycle?
A. No. This change includes a transition period that provides all PMPs with a partial year that extends beyond their current 3-year cycle. Thereafter, once they renew their credential, all PMPs will be on a standard 3-year cycle.
Q. Why is the change being made?
A. The PMI Certification Program is continuously updated to align with ISO (International Organizations for Standardization). This expiration date change corresponds with best practices for a global certification program. The change also will simplify the renewal process to enable PMI to serve you more efficiently.
Q. How do I maintain multiple credentials simultaneously?
A. PMI makes it easy for you to maintain multiple credentials simultaneously. If you want to obtain the PgMP credential, you can align the certification/CCR cycle to your PMP credential cycle as part of the PgMP application process. Then, you only have to earn and report a total of 60 PDUs (not 120 PDUs) during the aligned three-year cycle to maintain both credentials.
If you want to obtain the PMI-SP or PMI-RMP, you cannot align the certification/CCR cycles, but you can apply the PDUs you earn for the specialty credentials to the maintenance of your PMP or PgMP credential. Therefore, to maintain the PMP and the PMI-SP, for instance, you only have to earn and report 60 PDUs (not 90 PDUs). Be mindful that in order to maintain the PMI-SP or PMI-RMP credential(s), the professional development activities must be in the specialized area of project risk management or project scheduling respectively.
