2008 Building Better Futures Campaign Year in Review

Through the generous contributions of thousands of individual and organizational donors, and partnerships with innovative leaders in project management,  PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF) is proud to have helped further programs and initiatives that are building better futures through project management around the world.

A Better Prepared Workforce of the Future

Through the Scholarships and Awards Program, PMIEF awarded US$80,000 of scholarships to 23 college and university students. This year saw the launch of the four Dr. Harold Kerzner Scholarships, sponsored by International Institute for Learning, Inc. (IIL) as well as new scholarships sponsored by PMI Central Iowa, Dallas, TX (USA), San Diego, CA (USA) and Phoenix (AZ, USA) Chapters as well as Colorado Technical University.

The James R. Snyder International Student Paper of the Year (ISPY) Award had an international impact this year, giving awards to students living in the Europe-Middle East-Africa (EMEA), Latin America, and North America regions. Each research paper demonstrated an advancement in the project management discipline, and the authors presented their papers at the PMI Global Congress in their region.

The Donald S. Barrie Award, sponsored by the PMI Design-Procurement-Construction SIG, was given to a construction management student who presented his paper at PMI Global Congress 2008—North America.

Please visit PMIEF.org for more information on scholarships and awards and to view a list of scholarship and ISPY Award winners.

A Better Prepared Society for Future Success

With several dedicated program partners, PMIEF helped primary and secondary school students develop 21st Century skills needed to compete in today’s global marketplace.

Philadelphia School Project: The Philadelphia School Project pilot, “Spring Garden Alive”, started last summer and continues at two inner city schools. This initiative is a partnership involving PMIEF, DeVry University, The School District of Philadelphia, and the PMI Delaware Valley Chapter, who supported their volunteer mentors. Students attended a project management class, which included 21st Century Skills. The received college credit for their participation in the class. Their assignment was to construct a business plan to develop a useful application for a vacant lot in the city.

Training Fellowships: Thanks to a donation from Cadence Management Corporation, PMIEF started awarding training fellowships to primary and secondary school teachers and administrators. Fellowship winners receive complimentary seats at the Project Management Essentials seminar offered by Cadence.  The knowledge gained will help teachers implement project-based learning in their classrooms and help both teachers and administrators apply project management to their own professional work.

Project Lead the Way: In April, PMIEF funded a grant to the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Eastern Michigan University (EMU) chapter. Using a project learning curriculum for math and engineering, EMU succeeded in training six classes of secondary school teachers and recruiting 50 schools to participate in the program.

Project Learning Projects: The PMIEF has three project learning projects underway that will provide relevant knowledge and useful tools for application in future classroom initiatives. Each of the projects is staffed by a team of  PMI volunteers that represent various regions of the world, thereby assuring that the resultant information and products are global.

  • Create a Central Repository of Project Learning Information
The purpose of this project is to create a central repository of project learning and project management materials or programs for primary and secondary school students. The project team needs to conduct global research and catalog the programs and materials.
  • Create a Mentor Toolkit for Use in Primary and Secondary Schools
The purpose of this project is to create a tool kit for PMI volunteers who are mentoring students enrolled in a project management/project learning class and teachers who are teaching a project management/project learning class.
  • Establish a Library of Project Management Projects for Use in the Classroom
The purpose of this project is to establish a library of project management projects that could be utilized in project learning and/or project management classes for primary and secondary school students. The library of projects will be utilized by teachers and mentors.

Project Learning Resources Available on the PMIEF Website

Educators and mentors are encouraged to visit the Learning Zone on PMIEF.org to access a growing collection of project management curricula. Currently, three curricula are available:

  • Projects From the Future: developed by the PMI Northern Italy chapter for ages 6-9. (Currently available in Italian, an English translation is in progress.
  • Building Project Managers for the Future: developed by the PMI KC Mid America Chapter for ages 11-13
  • Project Management Systems for High School: developed by the PMI Mile High Chapter for ages 14-18

If you or someone you know is interested in sharing your project management or project learning curriculum, please contact diane.fromm@pmi.org.

In July, PMIEF donated a collection of books  to establish project management libraries in South Africa and at two high schools in Philadelphia, PA (USA).

A Better Prepared Response in Future Times of Need

PMIEF helped advance the project management skills of humanitarian and relief professionals worldwide to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their operations.

The Project Management for Non-Governmental Organizations (PM4NGO’s) initiative provided project management training to disaster relief workers. Seed money from PMIEF enabled partner organization, Learning for International Non-Governmental Organizations (LINGOs), to train 107 people in 31 countries including Myanmar, Uganda, Cameroon and the United Kingdom. LINGOs also provided 29 NGO agencies with training including CARE, Mercy Corps and Catholic Relief Services.

Donations of money, resources and time helped to make these programs possible in 2008. To continue these works in 2009 and beyond, we need your support.

You will be taken to the PMI Marketplace to complete your online donation. You may also download a donation form to donate by postal mail or fax.
