The Accomplishments of Matthew H. Parry
PMI
was saddened to learned of the 8 September 1999 death of one of
its first members, Matthew H. Parry of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Over the years, he made numerous contributions to PMI.
Member
No. 26, Parry was the first person from outside the United States
to become PMI president, 1976-1977; chair, 1978; and PMI Fellow,
1982. He also was vice president of functional operations on the
PMI board of directors, 1974-1975.
During
his tenures in office, the first PMI chapters were chartered; PMI
membership grew from 785 to nearly 2000; the first PMI software
survey was published; PMI’s first permanent office space was
established; the Workshop in the Fundamentals of Project
Management began at the Seminars & Symposium; and talk of
certification was initiated.
Parry
was project manager for the Fifth Annual Seminars and Symposium,
22-24 October 1973 in Toronto, the first held outside the United
States. In 1979, he became one of a very few to receive the PMI
Honorary Life Member Award. He was a founder and Honorary Life
Member of the PMI Southern Ontario Chapter. He was also in the
inaugural PMP® class and held PMP No. 23.
Parry
served as project manager for the PMI Ethics, Standards, and
Accreditation (ESA) Project. The committee’s final report, which
appeared in a special issue of the Project Management Quarterly
[August 1983] and which contained the first Code of Ethics for
Project Management, was a predecessor to A Guide to the Project
Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)
and served as a foundation to the Project Management Professional
(PMP) Certification program and the university accreditation
initiative.
Founder and president of Time/Audit Ltd. (now known as Target
Consultants), he performed in-depth analyses and monitored
progress on major construction projects.
