Savannah River Site

2018 PMI Award for Project Excellence North America Region Winner: Savannah River Site D-Area Ash

Coal-fired power plants served the Savannah River Site, which produced plutonium for the U.S. military. The plants produced more than 60 years’ worth of nonradioactive ash near a river that was a source of drinking water. The U.S. Department of Energy launched a project in 2014 to begin closing the ash basins. The team prided itself on being transparent to regulators. That helped the project come in ahead of schedule and under budget.
