Savannah River Site Salt Waste Processing Facility Commissioning

Parsons Corporation

The commissioning of the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) completes the startup of the Department of Energy’s newest Hazard Category Nuclear Facility. The facility is the last major piece of the Savannah River Site liquid waste processing system. SWPF will process the majority of the site’s salt waste by separating the highly radioactive constituents for treatment via vitrification from the predominately low radioactivity salts, which will be treated for disposal on site. Removing this salt waste is a major step toward closing the Site’s 43 remaining high-level waste tanks and eliminating the most significant environmental risk to the region.
