Galen Townson is a systems leader with 29 years in strategy execution and complex change programs for education, finance, government and impact sectors. He now leads a PMO to address homelessness, domestic violence, child abuse, and develop human services for social impact.
Since 1999, Mr. Townson has served on boards and committees for professional associations and community nonprofits. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, UK Institute of Directors and U.S. National Association of Corporate Directors. He has completed board chair and company director courses and holds a diploma in company direction with distinctions in strategy and finance.
His 20+ certifications include agile, project, program, portfolio and PMO. He has spoken at international conferences, taught project management to the MBA level, and teaches Project Management Professional (PMP)®certification and Disciplined Agile™courses.
Following his EMBA and graduate certificate in social impact (University of Western Australia), he studied sustainability (Curtin University) and advanced project management (Stanford University), and later earned a master’s degree in applied positive psychology (University of Melbourne).
Joining PMI in 2000, from 2009 Mr. Townson served in chapter board and president roles, and 2014 through 2018 as a region mentor developing chapter leaders across Australia and New Zealand.
Elected in 2018 to the PMI Board of Directors, he helped develop PMI’s branding; commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals; 50th anniversary celebration; updated board development program; sustainable investing; and social impact for strategy. As the Audit Committee chair since 2020, he also oversees PMI’s global performance, audit, risk, finance and investments, and serves on the Board’s Executive Committee.
Mr. Townson’s young family (including his wife who serves as chapter president) enjoys learning, traveling and sailing together. He also develops interests in sustainability, social enterprise, systems and design thinking, and coaches for purpose, wellbeing and impact.
