— Project Management Institute (PMI) announced today that BC Hydro has been awarded the 2016 PMO of the Year Award.
The Canadian utility company relies on its project management office to handle up to 600 projects at a time and to help steer a portfolio representing CAD$20 billion in capital investments over the next ten years. Providing clean energy to more than 4 million residents across British Columbia, BC Hydro has successfully closed 563 capital projects worth approximately CA$6.5 billion over the past five years, coming in under budget overall.
The PMO of the Year Award honors a PMO that has demonstrated superior organizational project management abilities by adding value to its organization through its support of successful strategic initiatives. The award recognizes a PMO that has established a vision for value delivery and has had a positive and clear impact on business results.
Santiago, Chile-based Entel and Irvine, California’s Parker Aerospace were the finalists for this year’s award.
Entel, a member of PMI Global Executive Council, is making massive infrastructure investments to keep pace with the fast-changing telecommunications industry and retain its long track record of outstanding customer service. The PMO supports around 730 projects and more than 200 project managers at any given time. An example of the type of initiative supported by the PMO is a US$136 million effort to provide mobile service and internet access to 549-plus communities in isolated and rural areas throughout the country.
Parker Aerospace and parent company Parker Hannifan Corp create aircraft-control and emission-reduction systems for customers that include Airbus, Boeing and the U.S. Department of Defense. One of the company’s keys to success is the deployment of earned value management, which measures the ability of projects and programs to meet cost and schedule commitments. One division used earned value management to reduce cost overruns by 92 percent in the past year.
“PMI congratulates the winner and finalists for the 2016 PMO of the Year award,” said PMI President and CEO Mark A. Langley. “As the PMOs at BC Hydro, Entel and Parker Aerospace have amply demonstrated, project management offices play a crucial role in delivering organizational value by ensuring that strategic programs are implemented in ways that meet the original goals and come in on or under time and budget.”
The winner and finalists received the award at PMI’s annual PMO Symposium® in San Diego, California. Project management professionals from all three companies also shared first hand lessons on delivering value as part of the symposium’s educational program.
