jindal super thermal power plant

PMI India Project of the Year

Large Category
Winner: Jindal Power Limited
Project: O.P. Jindal Super Thermal Power Plant

The project team set a record by completing the first phase of the plant in 22.5 months — the only time a megaproject of this nature was completed in less than 24 months. For the second phase of the project, the team had an even tighter schedule of 17 months from the start of the boiler erection stage. All obstacles had to be resolved with an eye on the clock.

The team adopted a holistic approach to project management in which the actual schedule and cost indices were regularly monitored against approved schedules and budget. This included initiatives like setting up a project management office team at the project site and head office; drawing up detailed schedules and rigorous catch up plans; regular monitoring using “S curves” and earned value management; and putting in place a unique target-based incentive plan for agencies, apart from prioritizing the health and safety of workers at the site.

Phase 2 of the power plant was completed in a record time of 16.5 months. The plant, which has set a new industry benchmark for rapid commissioning by using only indigenous equipment, has given a boost to India’s power generation capacity.

photovoltaic direct driving frequency centrifuge system

PMI China Project of the Year

Winner: Zhuhai GREE Electric Appliances Inc.
Project: Photovoltaic Direct Driving Frequency Centrifuge System Research and Demonstration Project

The GREE building photovoltaic direct driving frequency centrifuge system research and demonstration project aims to develop a green central air conditioning system, reduce building energy consumption, establish a role model of integrated solar photovoltaic building application, and a commercial photovoltaic air conditioning system manufacturing based on renewable energy.

The project was identified by a technological achievements appraisal organized by Guangdong Science and Technology Department. This technology meets global advanced standards.

The project claimed special funds of 16.51 million RMB in 2012 after winning a key industry and technical reconstruction award by the national development and reform commission. It also allocated a fiscal funds allowance of 4.43 million RMB from the solar photovoltaic building application demonstration project in 2012 by National Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Construction.

Focus on Business Analysis

Business analysts—or BAs—play an important role on a project team. There is tremendous demand for skilled BAs and PMI is taking steps to meet that need. We published practice guides on business analysis and requirements management to help professionals build their skills. We launched the PMI Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA)® certification to spotlight those skills. Due to great response for these resources, we are now developing a foundational standard in business analysis. Set to publish in 2018, it will join PMI’s other foundational standards like the PMBOK® Guide and The Standard for Program Management.

Role Delineation Study

In 2015, we completed  a role delineation study (RDS) for the Project Management Professional (PMP)® and PMI Agile Certified Professional (PMI-ACP)® certifications. An RDS is a form of research conducted to understand the major job tasks, responsibilities and knowledge areas required of a specific role. This research provided the basis to develop new PMP® and PMI-ACP® examinations.

We revamped the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program to focus certification holders’ continuing education on the employer-demanded skills of the PMI Talent Triangle™ – technical, leadership, and strategic and business management.
