In 2016, PMI’s global advocacy, collaboration, education and research efforts focused on the benefits of project management and its value as a strategic competency that can reduce risk, cut costs and improve success rates. Legislation: Program Management Improvement and Accountability Act

In December 2016, U.S. President Barack Obama signed into law the Program Management Improvement and Accountability Act of 2015 (PMIAA, P.L. 114-264), which will enhance accountability and best practices in project and program management throughout the United States federal government. The legislation, strongly endorsed by PMI, was approved by both chambers of Congress with overwhelming bi-partisan support.

PMIAA reforms federal government program management policy in four important ways:

  1. Creates a formal job series and career path for program managers.
  2. Develops a standards-based program management policy.
  3. Recognizes the essential role of executive sponsorship and engagement by designating a senior executive responsible for program management policy and strategy.
  4. Shares knowledge of successful approaches to program management through an interagency council on program management.

Student Engagement: Enactus

Projects change the world

Engaging university students and young professionals prepares them for project-oriented careers. PMI’s Academic Programs department works with student initiatives to generate awareness of project management, through programs like Enactus.

Enactus is an international collegiate organization where teams create and implement community development projects. Students gain project management skills and transform their ideas into real, sustainable projects for their communities. The program is an extracurricular activity on most college campuses, though some universities incorporate it into the classroom, enabling students to obtain PMI’s Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification as part of their coursework. Our Academic Programs team is focused on moving project management away from being a profession that people fall into accidentally to a field that students purposefully choose to study and pursue as a career.

Pulse of the Professtion

Pulse of the Profession®, the annual global survey of project management practitioners that has been conducted since 2006, charts major trends for project management. Findings in the 2016 report continue to show that when organizations embrace project, program, and portfolio management practices, they have better outcomes.


The 2016 PMI Thought Leadership Series took us through the challenging world of benefits realization management, which is the collective process of identifying benefits at the outset of a project and ensuring, through purposeful actions during implementation, that the benefits are realized and sustained once the project ends. This series included a framework to help organizations implement BRM through a set of questions and good practices to identify, analyze, deliver and sustain benefits that align with strategic goals.

We also highlighted world-class project management performance through case studies with Australia’s leading tech and telecom company Telstra and global engineering company CH2M.

Standards: 2016 Updates

2016 Standards updates

PMI global standards provide guidelines, good practices and high performance characteristics for project, program and portfolio management. These standards are widely accepted and, when consistently applied, help organizations achieve professional excellence. 2016 saw the publication of three standards: Governance of Portfolios, Programs, and Projects: A Practice Guide; the Construction Extension to the PMBOK® Guide; and the Project Manager Competency Development Framework – Third Edition. Significant work on the preeminent global standard for project management, A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), occurred in 2016. The release of the Sixth edition is set for September 2017.

One of the big events for the PMI certification program in 2016 was the launch of the PMI Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA)® in China during a June 2016 China testing event. This was done in response to a growing need for business analysis skills in the Chinese market. Forty-nine candidates tested at the event.
