The Future of AI and Project Management

PMI recently released its Pulse of the Profession: AI Innovators report, which focused on six AI technologies (including machine learning, knowledge-based systems, robotic process automation, etc.) that are having a big impact on the field of project management. This panel will feature one of the creators of the report, PMI Global's Chief Digital Officer Mark Broome, speaking about the findings of that report, followed by a short panel of researchers from the University of Maryland's PhD program in project management talking about their active research in one of those six areas. You won't want to miss this fascinating event on the future of project management.

Mark Broome

Vice President, Chief Digital Officer, Project Management Institute

As PMI's Vice President and Chief Digital Officer, Mark is responsible for building and operating PMI's data-driven digital operating model and software platform. The platform vision is to deliver personalized customer experiences that support professional career journeys while also enabling PMI to gain deep insights through machine learning, artificial intelligence, and other advanced analytics technologies.

Before PMI, Mark held several leadership roles, providing him with a wealth of experience in guiding organizations to adapt and thrive in a world of accelerating change and technology disruption by creating and implementing contemporary business, technology, and data analytics strategies. Mark has held leadership roles at Shire Pharmaceuticals, Gartner, Cigna, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, and Morgan Bank.

Additionally, Mark provides expert advisory and coaching support to startup companies in the digital and analytics technology space. This volunteer work provides an opportunity to maintain an entrepreneurial mindset and guide the future generation of business leaders.

Mark holds a Bachelor of Science in Systems Planning and Management from the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.

Kunqi Zhang

PhD Student in Project Management, University of Maryland

Kunqi (Quincy) Zhang is currently a PhD candidate in Project Management at the University of Maryland, College Park, and a research assistant in the program. His research interests include alternative project delivery, project financing, contracting equity, contract engineering, and construction worker health. He led the data collection effort to build and currently maintains the US Major Transportation Project Database, the most comprehensive of its kind in the US. Prior to this, he worked with the Maryland State Highway Administration to improve their Alternative Project Delivery program. Prior to this, he worked as Assistant Project Manager for CBRE, overseeing office fit-out projects in Beijing, China. Kunqi holds a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles and a Master’s degree in Construction Management from Columbia University. He is a registered civil engineer in California. He serves as Co-Chair of the ASCE National Capital Section Construction Committee.

Mazi Erfani

Mazi Erfani

PhD Student in Project Management, University of Maryland

Abdolmajid (Mazi) Erfani is currently a second-year Ph.D. student in the Project Management program at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research interests include data analytics, Machine learning, Natural language processing, project delivery, and risk management. He works with Federal Highway Administration to improve the process of risk management in Major US transportation projects through using historical data and machine learning techniques. He also serves as a team member of research projects associated with retrieving and analyzing social media data from Twitter, LinkedIn to enable data-driven decision-making models in Infrastructure projects. Prior to this, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Tehran, Iran, working on decision-making in renewable energy investment projects. Mazi holds a Master’s degree in Construction Engineering and Management from the University of Tehran and a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Tehran.

Justin has served as the AVP Strategic Technology for PMIWDC since 2020. He is currently a Presidential Innovation Fellow at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and was previously Managing Consultant at IBM, where he served as the Project Manager of a project with the Food & Drug Administration. He holds a B.A. in Economics and Public Policy from Syracuse University and an M.S. in Public Policy & Data Analytics from Carnegie Mellon University.

Billy Mwape

A Strategist, Project Manager, Risk and ICT Expert, TED speaker and Author with over 16 years of experience in the Banking and Mining sectors. He has among many others managed the following projects: ERP systems, Data center implementation, VoIP Systems, PABX systems, Corporate Governance systems, Credit Scoring system, Fintech, Streaming Application, Automation, Systems integration, Strategy formulation and Fund acquisition. He holds a Master of Business Administration – Strategic Planning from Heriot Watt University, BSc. Computer Science from Copperbelt University and a Diploma in Telecommunication Systems from City & Guilds of London Institute and he is pursuing a Doctorate in Business Administration with Heriot Watt University. He is a proven business and community leader with a passion for Project management and leadership training. He holds the following leadership roles: Vice President – Project Management Institute (PMI) Zambia chapter, Chairperson for Watt Club Zambia (Heriot Watt University Alumni), Council member (Heriot Watt University Alumni), Area Director for toastmasters, Lusaka, Zambia, CEO – Valley view and advisory board member – Project Leader Community. He believes that Project Management and leadership training is key to the attainment of organizational/national strategic goals, hence his passion to inspire African leaders through training and presentations. Billy has the following professional certifications: PMP, PMI-Agile Certified Practitioner, certified Expert in Risk management, COBIT 5, CCNA, MCT – Exchange server 2013, MCTS – SQL server 2008.
