- Identify the typical project life cycle and associated project management processes.
- Formulate a scope statement and deliverable-based work breakdown structure (WBS) and create a network schedule with activities, durations, and interdependencies.
- Identify and mitigate potential risk events, manage the risk responses if/when they occur, and manage changes to the project's scope, quality, time, and cost baselines.
Description
This training provides the practical knowledge needed to understand how to initiate, plan, execute, monitor, control and complete a project, which meets the deliverable requirements of the customer within predictable duration, effort, and cost parameters. Success as a project manager and project team is contingent on understanding the basics of mature project management.
Through discussion, facilitation and practical exercises, learners will comprehend the major process areas of project management. Using the framework provided, major process areas can be integrated and applied during each phase of a project's life cycle. This training will focus on how to integrate key thoughts, forms and templates into effective processes that can be used to proactively manage projects and the constant challenges impacting them — an important task for successful project teams.

- Distinguish and apply the definitions of a project and project management.
- Identify the key project elements, their interrelationships and prioritization.
- Explain the distinction between projects and operations and their relationship.
- Delineate and own the role of the project manager – along with the distinguishing the roles, responsibilities, and authority of other project stakeholders: project sponsor, functional manager, team member, customer, and others.
- Describe the overall flow and project management deliverables of a typical project life cycle.
- Identify and explain how projects are initiated and their primary deliverables.
- Learn how to generate project requirements and determine the operational success criteria to be achieved by the project's outcome.
- Identify and explain the distinction between product scope and project scope.
- Create a notional project WBS.
- Identify representative quality standards, and define performance, functional and form specifications.
- Apply proper scheduling techniques: estimating durations, establishing relationships and logic, and determining critical path activities.

- Use risk identification and quantification methods, response development strategies and risk control techniques.
- Identify and quantify the project's risks and develop resolution strategies.
- Determine risk-mitigating activities and assign contingency and management reserves to the project.
- Calculate the critical path of a schedule and determine alternative strategies to meeting the preferred milestone date.
- Distinguish and the role and responsibilities of the procurement organization and the project manager’s corresponding responsibilities in managing project procurements to successfully complete the project.
- Distinguish and apply the different methods of determining a project schedule’s status, progress, variance and resulting forecast (estimate to complete).
- Distinguish between quality assurance and quality control and perform example exercises.
- Manage changes to the project's scope, quality, time, and cost baselines using representative escalation / approval methods.
- Determine the appropriate project metrics to identify, capture, measure and analyze.
- Close a project and learn to apply the lessons learned.
- Develop an individual and organizational action plan to improve how projects are currently being managed.
