Review Highlights From Last Year's Conference

    2017 Keynote Speakers

Always a crowd favorite, Conference keynote presentations were designed to inspire, intrigue and delight!

    Sir Tim Berners-Lee

    Sir Tim Berners-Lee

    • Invented the World Wide Web in 1989
    • Recipient of the 2016 Turing Award “for inventing the World Wide Web, the first web browser”

Keynote Presentation: A Look Ahead into the Future of Tech

When Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, he saw a future no one else could have imagined and changed our lives forever. Now he is looking ahead to our next, new un-imagined future. What does that look like? What will it mean for your business and our society? Sir Tim takes his audiences beyond the technology itself, for example — The Internet of Things, Future of Artificial Intelligence, The Next Web Paradigm Shift, The Power of Data, Impact of Security and Privacy on the Web and business and into the real transformative impact these technologies are having and will have in the years ahead.

    Nicholas Epley

    Nicholas Epley

    • Conducts research on the experimental study of social cognition, perspective taking and intuitive human judgment
    • Author of Mindwise: How We Understand What Others Think, Believe, Feel, and Want (February 2014)

Keynote Presentation: Mindwise: How We Understand What Others Think Believe, Feel, Want

You are a mind reader, born with an extraordinary ability to understand what others think, feel, believe, want and know. It’s a sixth sense you use each day in every professional and personal relationship—but how well do you really know what your coworkers, employees, competitors or customers want or are thinking? In this high-energy, illuminating presentation, Nicholas Epley takes the audience on an exploration of one of the great mysteries of the human mind. How good are you at knowing the minds of others? How well can you guess what others think of you, know who really likes you or tell when others are lying? How well do you really understand the minds of those closest to you at work or at home? Why are we sometimes blind to the minds of others? Why do we sometimes talk to our cars, or the stars, as if there is a mind that can hear us? Why do we so routinely believe that others think, feel and want what we do, when in fact they do not? And, why we do we believe we understand our fellow workers, customers, competitors, spouses, family and friends so much better than we actually do? While Epley’s presentation will not turn others into open books, it will give you the wisdom to revolutionize how you think about them—and yourself.

    Mercedes Ramirez-Johnson

    Mercedes Ramirez Johnson

    • Survivor of a commercial airplane crash that killed 160 people, including her parents.
    • She presents her Second Chance Living concept, an innovative mindset and approach with a proven track record, to organizations such as General Electric, ExxonMobil, Microsoft, NASA, Chevron, and the various branches of the US Armed Forces.

Keynote Presentation: Get it Right Today, Not Tomorrow

Do your employees and leaders spend too much time putting out fires and putting off until tomorrow what should be done today? All too often we operate in Survival Mode – doing just enough to get the job done rather than doing a good job. Our goals are simply to endure the daily challenges, keep our heads above water and make it to the end of the week. Sound familiar? Individuals who routinely focus on surviving rather than thriving tend to be disengaged and unfulfilled. Organizations with Survival Mode cultures lose millions of dollars in productivity and struggle to achieve long-term profits and lasting success. Get It Right Today, Not Tomorrow serves as a wake-up call. An eye-opening presentation that won’t be forgotten, it powerfully dispels the notion that there will always be a tomorrow in which we can finish today’s important yet unfinished business. Weaving her inspirational story of tragedy, survival and recovery with solid business content, Mercedes challenges and changes the way people think and act. Her up-front dialogue, true-life examples and on-the-job application of real-world lessons moves audiences to work and live with intention.

2017 Project of the Year Finalists

    Gahcho Kué Project

De Beer’s Gahcho Kué mine was built deep in Canada’s Northwest Territories just below the Arctic Circle. The project was to build a diamond mine and production facility in one of the world’s harshest climates. The facility started production two months early.

Hanford Double Shell Tank AY-102 Recovery Project

Tank AY-102 is a 1 million gallon capacity double shell tank commissioned in 1971 storing radioactive and chemical waste. In August 2012, this storage tank was found to be leaking nuclear waste. The nuclear waste needed to be removed and transferred to a double-shell tank for safe storage. The project closed ahead of scheduled and US$8.7 million under budget.

    University Link Light Rail Extension

Seattle Washington is the second worst city in the U.S. for time commuters are stuck in traffic. In order to reduce rising roadway congestion, this project was implemented to extend the light rail system 3.2 miles (5 kilometers) via underground tunnels. The rail line opened six months ahead of schedule, and the project closed US$200 million under budget.
