Chapters Share Best Practices for Virtual Events

The PMI Montreal Chapter shared that it pivoted to a 100% online presence in a single week. Like many North America chapters, PMI Montreal Chapter was already leveraging Zoom for the evening, online exam prep courses. When in-person meetings for their other offerings were no longer an option due to COVID-19, they transferred all events to this platform and mailed physical materials to people's homes.

Many of the R3 chapters have moved conferences and chapter meetings to Zoom. PMI New Brunswick Chapter is exploring the options around moving the chapter’s AGM to a virtual setting after successfully switching an in-person Lunch & Learn to Zoom. Other virtual options discussed were Google Meet (leveraged by the PMI Newfoundland & Labrador Chapter), Go To Meeting (the preference of the PMI Toronto Chapter), and Slack (which the PMI Champlain Valley Chapter uses for messaging as a board with volunteers).

According to the Montreal Chapter, online events have seen a surge in participation beyond what the chapter would normally see with in-person events. Some tips they shared include reducing prices, offering promotional codes and making sure to publicize repeatedly on social media, such as Facebook and LinkedIn. Additionally, they are selecting topics in light of the current global situation such as risk management and virtual team management. They are looking to extend this offer to anyone in the network who has something to share with chapter members.
