Management approach to airborne satellite communications terminal testing

This article discusses some of the lessons learned in testing airborne satellite communications terminals. With the evolution to sophisticated electronic technology, the basic test philosophy has changed so that testing is now an extension of the development phase instead of a sell-off of the final product. A balanced approach to testing begins with mathematical modeling and analysis in order to identify high-risk problems early. Prototypes can be built for further testing. In summary, beginning from the starting point of a clear understanding of the customer's needs, a plan should be developed for allocating resources in the most cost-effective manner. Those people performing the test should be committed and involved, allowed to innovate and to make honest mistakes.
