The Benfield column repair project
When a fire in a carbonate regeneration column buckled the structure's shell and caused it bend in the middle, the South African coal, chemical, and crude oil company operating this unit had to cease operations--losing much income--until the column was repaired. This article describes how the project team--Sastech, a subsidiary of Sasol Group--developed innovative techniques for managing the repair of this column, techniques which enabled the team to complete the project 15 days ahead of schedule and more than 25 percent below budget.
