Effective project management practices during expert systems implementation

Project management techniques are used in many industries. However, little information is available about how to implement project management techniques in expert systems. In an effort to research what techniques project managers are currently using and what works best for them in implementing expert systems, a two-part research survey was conducted of a non-random sample of commercial banks.Nine recommendations from the results were developed for implementing an expert system using project management techniques. The suggestions are: different systems will need different managerial involvement; top managers must be involved throughout implementation; garner support from a computer specialist; keep users involved; keep computer specialists involved throughout the project; maintain adequate financial support; establish realistic time frames for project completion; design system as if it will be for sale; and do not attempt to overly limit the project scope early in the project.
