Literature review

Areas of general discussion were current managerial technology and future improvements for project management. Each panelist spoke on his specific areas of interest, followed by an open question and answer period. An audience of over 150 was able to share the knowledge and views on project management as seen by senior executives, and was afforded the opportunity to ask provocative questions of the panel in an informal atmosphere. Also, at this session both candidates for the International PMI Vice President of Chapter Relations position, James L. Easton and David H. Morton, were introduced and allowed to make a brief presentation of their qualifications to the audience.

PMI-NCC has grown from a local chapter of 35 to over 225 members in only a year. The monthly programs, held at the Engineers Club in San Francisco, have attracted an average of 130 people with an active interest in project management. The recently completed, and highly successful program featured State-of-the-Art in Project Management presentations by each of the seven major engineeringconstruction firms in the Bay Area. Papers covering the highlights of the State-of-the-Art series are being included in the proceedings of the International PMI Symposium in October, as well as the Project Management Quarterly.

A project manager usually works with a project team of one sort of another. This project team is a small group subject to the laws of group dynamics. This month’s Literature Review lists some of the newer books on group process, leadership in groups, and conflict resolution — in effect the behavioral side of project management.

FISHER, B. AUBREY. Small Group Decision Making: Communication and the Group Process. McGraw-Hill series in speech. 1974. Mc-Graw-Hill, Inc. An excellent and recent overall summary.

COOPER, CARY L. Developing Social Skills in Managers — Advances in Group Training. Published in the USA by Halsted Press, a Division of John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York. 1976. The Association of Teachers of Management. A new book which discusses “do’s and don’t’s” from recent-experience in group activities.

FILLEY, ALAN C. Interpersonal Conflict Resolution. 1975. Scott, Foresman and Company. An excellent summary of conflict with a proposed model for conflict resolution.

FIEDLER, FRED E. Leadership and Effective Management. 1974. Scott, Foresman and Company. A summary of current information on leadership in groups.

SHEPHERD, CLOVIS R. Small Groups — Some Sociological Perspectives. 1964. Chandler Publishing Company. Twelve years old but still a good review on various background studies on small group theory.

OLMSTEAD, JOSEPH A. Small-Group Instruction: Theory and Practice. 1974. Human Resources Research Organization. A practical “How to do it” book with exercises on small group instruction.

It is requested that materials submitted for publication maintain the following guidelines.

Submit three copies of the manuscript, typed on standard 8½A × 11 paper, double-spaced throughout, with one inch margins. All footnotes, tables, and figures should be arranged at the end of the manuscript. Headings and subheadings should be left-justified in the following manner:
