Managing resources for a construction project in a mixed (PC-mainframe) environment

The Advanced Semiconductor Technology Center (ASTC) had the opportunity to experiment with using a mainframe computer in conjunction with a PC during a major construction project.Early in the project, the general contractor realized that the PC software was too slow and limited to provide the type of information that was required on the construction project.Using a mainframe computer appeared to be a viable option.Matching two different project management terminologies, and developing a procedure to transfer data from the PC and the mainframe and back took one expert in project management 6 months to complete. This commingled PC/mainframe system was a success, and in the end helped to save a few million dollars.Given the success of this project, using a mainframe computer could be a viable option for other projects.
