Model for risk impact measurement based on the WBS and the RBS
Because the environment in which project managers work is full of risks that continually challenge their ability to deliver projects that meet scope, schedule, budget, and quality targets, they can easily fail--if they ignore the impact of not managing these risks--to meet the project's expected outcomes. To successfully realize projects, project managers must focus on applying the processes outlined in PMI's PMBOK Guide(r). This paper discusses how project managers can improve their project performance by measuring and evaluating each project risk to determine how it could affect the project team's ability to meet its expected outcomes. It then outlines a model for evaluating project risk: a matrix for integrating the work breakdown structure (WBS) and the risk breakdown structure (RBS) to establish a comprehensive inventory of a project's risk sources. It also describes an information system model capable of supporting the integration matrix.
