The United Arab Emirates gained its wealth through the oil and gas industry. Now its leaders are cultivating economic sustainability by diversifying the country's portfolio. This article discusses how a project team overcame talent shortages and a delayed port construction to deliver the EMAL Smelter Complex in Al Taweelah under budget and four months ahead of schedule. In doing so, it explains how the project was divided into seven areas. It describes how the project team addressed risk assessment and identifies a major risk encountered during the project. It then discusses how the project team handled safety issues. It concludes by discussing a major scheduling conflict that threatened the project and describes how the project team dealt with the conflict.
