Government entities waste US$97 million for every US$1 billion invested in projects and programs. When governments commit to project and program management leading practices, consistently better outcomes are well within reach.
PMI is committed to supporting project, program and portfolio management within governments worldwide. Our global government relations team works with lawmakers, agencies, ministries, and parliamentary bodies around the world to encourage adoption of leading project and program management practices, which improves delivery of goods and services and reduces unnecessary waste.
Program Management Improvement and Accountability Act
In June 2018, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released OMB Memorandum M-18-19, which establishes the Administration’s initial guidance to Federal agencies for implementing the Program Management Improvement Accountability Act (PMIAA). PMI looks forward to working with agencies and program management improvement officers in the coming months to implement this key legislation.

PMIAA: Strengthening the Government Delivery Foundation
Working with the government of Canada on policy-shaping efforts driving efficiency in government projects and programs. Serving as the first non-government associate member of the federal cross-ministry Investment Planning and Project Management (IP&PM) Community of Practice.
Supporting and advising the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, to develop a Project e-Governance Framework for Digital India at the state and federal level. Digital India seeks to transform the nation into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.
United Kingdom and European Union
Providing direct assistance and recommendations to U.K. government working groups on knowledge management, standards and more to ensure policy is informed by the global leading practices in project and program management.
Following the EU Commission’s assessment and review of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), the PMI Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is now included within ESCO (multilingual classification of European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations) classification at the EU level. ESCO is an important deliverable of the Europe 2020 strategy for a well-prepared EU labor market, and the inclusion of the PMP® certification reinforces its status as the globally recognized gold standard of project management certifications.
Successfully advocated to have project management recognized as part of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics Standard Occupation Classification (SOC) system starting in 2018.
Serving as a resource for the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security and the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Intergovernmental Affairs focusing on legislation to improve acquisition program management across multiple agencies including:
- Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Acquisition Review Board Act
- DHS Multiyear Acquisition Strategy Act
- DHS Acquisition Authorities Act
- Reducing DHS Acquisition Cost Growth Act
Collaborating with federal agencies and economic development banks to improve capacity and capability in project, program and portfolio management.
- Working with the Federal Acquisition Institute to ensure strong project management competencies.
- Providing PMI standards to the Government Accountability Office for program evaluations.
- Supporting project management training with the Inter-American Development Bank.
