THE BIRTH OF THE PMI-NIC

1996
The PMI Northern Italy Chapter was founded in 1996 by a group of “pioneers” with the mission of promoting the project management culture in Italy.

1997
PRE: M. Muffato Moreno Muffatto is President of the PMI-NIC.

  • He will keep his charge until 2000.

1998

VP: G. Beghini Giorgio Beghini is VP of the PMI-NIC.

  • He will remain in office until 1999.

1999

  • Mario Damiani supports Giorgio Beghini as VP of the PMI-NIC.
  • He will keep his position until 2005.

2000

  • Fabrizio Agnesi becomes President. The VP of PMI-NIC become 5: Mario Damiani and Andrea Azzali from the previous year, to which are added Marcello Patrese (until 2005), Fabrizio Mertelli (until 2004) and Francesco Carraro (only for this year).

  • The VP become 3: they leave Andrea Azzali and Francesco Carraro. 3 Deputy Directors join the Board: Alberto Federico Melgrati and Guido Casati (until 2003) and Antonio Bertero (only for the current year).

  • The Presidency of Carlo Notari begins, which will last until 2010. It is the longest Presidency maintained so far in the PMI-NIC. Mario VP is flanked by Mario Damiani, Marcello Pratese, Fabrizio Martelli and Fabrizio Agnese who passes to VP as outgoing President. As Deputy Directors, Antonio Bertero leaves and Anna Maria Felici (until 2004) and Luciano Garagna (until 2006) enter.

2004

  • Tiziano Villa takes over as VP to Fabrizio Agnesi. The Deputy Directors go down to 2 (Anna Maria Felici and Luciano Garagna), both Alberto Federico Melgrati and Guido Casati having left.

  • The first edition of “Progettando” was held in Verona. 

2007

  • The first two Branches were founded: Piemonte-Valle d’Aosta and Veneto.
  • The Piedmont / Valle d'Aosta Branch, directed by Esther Cobos and Ilaria Marletti (DA), and the Veneto Branch directed by Alberto Roveda are born

  • The Branch Toscana/Umbria was founded. 
  • The Branch was handed over to the PMI Central Italy Chapter in 2017, following the birth of the PMI Italy Chapters Federation.
  • The Tuscany / Umbria Branch is born, directed by Donatella Calderini and Mirella Conti (DA).
  • The Branch will move to the Central Italy Chapter in 2017.

  • The PMI-NIC hosted the PMI EMEA Congress in Milan at the presence of more than 900 attendees. 
  • The Branch Emilia Romagna was founded.
  • The Emilia Romagna Branch is born, directed by Gianmarco Antonelli and Daniele Di Lorenzo (DA).

  • Giorgio Bensa received the PMI Chapter Award – Volunteer of the Year, given to him in Vancouver for the “Projects in Bloom” (“Progetti in Erba”) format that was created with the aim of spreading Project Management in primary schools.
  • The Branch Friuli Venezia Giulia was founded.
  • The Friuli Venezia Giulia Branch directed by Giorgio Bensa and Paolo Guglia (DA) is born.

2013

  • Esther Cobos, Director of Branch Piemonte-Valle D’Aosta, received the Kerzner Award, the international award that is given to excellences in Project Management. She won it for the coordination of “Kubunina”, a cooperation program between Italy and Congo developed to improve childhood life conditions.
  • The Branch Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol was founded.
  • The Trentino Alto Adige - SudTirol Branch is born, directed by Alberto Perli and Paolo Mabboni (DA).

2014

  • Walter Ginevri, Chapter President, received the Distinguished Contribution Award for his contribution to the spread of project management for social good.

2015

  • The Branch Lombardia was founded.
  • The Lombardy Branch was born, directed by Andrea Peruzzi, Gianluca Bonasegale (DA) and Jeff Schwarz (DA).

2016

  • PMI-NIC promoted the establishment of a strategic agreement between the 3 Italian Chapters (Northern Italy Chapter, Central Italy Chapter and Southern Italy Chapter) to cooperate at at national level and guarantee the PMI presence all over the territory. The Federation of PMI Italy Chapters was then born.
  • Walter Ginevri received the PMI Fellow Award, the PMI’s highest and most prestigious individual award. He is the only Italian ever to obtain this recognition.

2017

  • The PMI-NIC won the PMI EMEA Region 8 Retention Award. 
  • The Branch Liguria was founded.

2018

  • The Chapter revised its By-Laws and created a new organizational structure.

  • The Chapter celebrated its 25th anniversary and won the PMI Chapter of the Year award.

  • The Chapter is reorganised in three territorial Branches: North-West, North-Central, North-East
