At PMI, it’s not just WHAT we do that matters. Our culture and HOW we achieve our goals is just as important.

Our culture is a community-wide agreement of how we collaborate and the mindsets and behaviors we choose.

Culture doesn't happen to you—it happens because of you. It belongs to all of us. Every individual, team or group—including employees, members, volunteers, and certification holders—has a stake in creating and maintaining a culture that recognizes everyone’s contributions and interests.

    Our PMI Culture Values & Behaviors

    Our five PMI Culture Values (Make It Easy • Aim Higher • Be Welcoming • Embrace Curiosity • Together We Can) were created by our community, for our community. These are not just words on a page, they are principles to guide how we work and volunteer together. If every member of our community embodies these values and behaviors, we will create a sense of unity and purpose.

    A Culture Ecosystem that activates our Values and Behaviors

    PMI doesn’t have a culture – PMI is a culture. Our culture thrives not by chance but through deliberate activators—key forces that bring our values to life and embed them into how we work, make decisions, and interact. These activators help sustain a culture where behaviors are consistent, meaningful, and inspiring:

    • Rituals: Traditions and practices that reinforce our values, foster a sense of belonging, strengthen engagement and create identity. These include events like LIMs, LIVPM, All Hands, Managers meeting or Product Launch Parties among others.
    • Heroes: Recognizable figures—individuals, projects or groups - who bring our values to life and serve as role models making abstract values tangible. Heroes inspire other people to act in alignment with the culture. Examples include Professional Awards recipients, New Membership model project, Culture Ambassadors/Champions, ERGs among others.
    • Storytelling: Shared narratives that bring our culture to life—connecting history, values, and identity in a way that is relatable, memorable, and emotionally engaging. Examples include the rationale behind PMI:Next, experiences from the PMI founding members, PMP journey, chapter engagement among others.
    • Systems: Organizational mechanisms that reinforce culture through policies, procedures and structures, ensuring values are embedded in daily operations -such as recruitment, engagement, meeting formats and leadership development.

    As our Be Welcoming cultural value reiterates, we create genuine belonging for all because our differences make us stronger.

    In late 2019, our Board of Directors saw the need to reaffirm our commitment to diversity and belonging. We know and believe that diversity brings value to our community and the profession, and it is embedded in our Culture Values, but our work shouldn’t stop there. That’s why we show the value of our differences by building on our diverse backgrounds and perspectives to: 

    • Support a positive environment
    • Promote personal and professional development
    • Empower all people to reach their full potential
    • Advance and advocate for the project management profession globally.

    Statement on Diversity: PMI is committed to cultivating a culture of inclusion and belonging and is working to make that a reality within our community and beyond. As our work advances, we recognize that this is a journey, and part of that journey is providing spaces for our community to learn and grow.

    To drive cultural impact, PMI has established a network of dedicated groups that shape and sustain our culture. Each group plays a unique role in fostering a culture where all voices are valued, and every individual can contribute meaningfully.

    Culture & Diversity Advisory & Strategy Groups

    The Culture Collaborative is an internal cross-functional team that provides advisory, strategy and subject matter expertise to advance our Culture and Diversity initiatives, ensuring alignment with our purpose and strategy.

    The Culture & Diversity Insight Team is a global volunteer team that offers guidance and feedback on best practices, shaping PMI’s efforts to build greater diversity and belonging on global and local levels.

    Culture & Diversity Champions & Ambassadors

    Culture & Diversity Champions are PMI team members serving as go-to resources in their respective departments, actively promoting and embodying our culture and values.

    Culture & Diversity Ambassadors are volunteers who serve as key resources for Regional Heads of Community, Chapter Partners and Regional Mentors. They promote PMI Culture to chapters and community segments and share and communicate Culture & Diversity resources and tools.

    Community-Led Groups for Connection & Collaboration

    Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are employee-led groups where employees connect, educate and advocate. They are driven by shared interests and contribute to a more inclusive workplace aligned to PMI Culture.

    Affinity Groups are community-driven networks created based on community interest. They serve to connect individuals with shared identities or interests through content and discussions in the Online Community, e.g. Women in Project Management.

    Chapters: Driving Culture Locally

    Many of our over 300 chapters worldwide have been active in culture and diversity efforts for decades. We are grateful for their steadfast leadership and collaborate with them to amplify their work and provide strategic insight and support. Each year, chapter leaders receive training to deepen their understanding and help them integrate diversity practices into their chapters. This training supports our goal of creating a more inclusive culture where everyone feels they are welcome.

    Around the world - How we created our Culture Values & Behaviors

    Around the World Culture Values and Behaviors

    Our Culture Values & Behaviors were co-created by our global community. In 2022 we collaborated with Chapter Board Members, Chapter Members, Global Volunteer Leaders, Employees and the PMI Board of Directors. Through interviews, surveys, creative workshops and deep discussions we created PMI Culture Values and Behaviors that were truly By PMI, For PMI. Our Around the World celebration video shows just a small selection of the people involved in our culture journey. Thank you to everyone who took part! Your creativity, insight and passion are incredible!
