All too often teams are interrupted but people outside of the team have no idea how problematic it is. It is important to track the type of work being done to create visibility across all roles. Management is typically not trying to damage the productivity of the teams. But “phantom” work and emergencies often take a bigger toll than they realize. It is usually not effective for a Scrum Master or team to not accept these interruptions. It what we at Net Objectives jokingly call a CLM (a “Career Limiting Move”). Instead, try suggesting that the work be done in the next iteration. If the manager insists it be done now, track the work as an interruption. Figure 1 shows these as ‘shoulder taps’ in purple.
